Here we review the pathologic features of a specialized tumor subset, collectively referred to as neuroendocrine tumors. These tumors arise almost anywhere in the body but many issues regarding their diagnosis and classification remain to be settled. Recent technical improvements, have increased the rate of detection, and have contributed to better diagnosis and classification of these tumors.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PanNETs) are usually located entirely within the pancreatic parenchyma. However, unusual exophytic or pedunculated PanNETs sometimes discovered in imaging studies, requiring differential diagnosis with various peripancreatic and non-tumors. Herein, an PanNET whose origin was identified only after surgical exploration is presented along potential radiologic diag...

A 58-year-old man was revealed to have multiple liver tumors with elevated prostatic acid phosphatase (PAP) during a medical examination. The tumors were of neuroendocrine nature, but no abnormal findings were obtained in other organs in which neuroendocrine tumors develop frequently. Repeated transarterial embolization was partially effective. However, the tumors became resistant to the therap...

Chromogranin A (CgA) is gaining acceptance as a serum marker of neuroendocrine tumors. Its specificity in differentiating between neuroendocrine and nonneuroendocrine tumors, its sensitivity to detect small tumors, and its clinical value, compared with other neuroendocrine markers, have not clearly been defined, however. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the clinical usefulness of C...

PURPOSE Recent studies suggest that temozolomide has activity in neuroendocrine tumors. Low levels of the DNA repair enzyme, O(6)-methylguanine DNA methyltransferase (MGMT), are associated with sensitivity to temozolomide in other tumor types. We evaluated the prevalence of MGMT deficiency in neuroendocrine tumors and correlated MGMT deficiency with treatment response to temozolomide-based regi...
