thermal barrier coatings (tbcs) are used to provide thermal insulation to the hot section components of gas turbines in order to enhance the operating temperature and turbine efficiency. hot corrosion and thermal shocks are the main destructive factors in tbcs which comes as a result of oxygen and molten salt diffusion into the coating. in this thesis atmospheric plasma spraying was used to dep...

The molecular dynamic technique was used to simulate the nano-indentation test on the thin films of silver, titanium, aluminum and copper which were coated on the silicone substrate. The mechanical properties of the selected thin films were studied in terms of the temperature. The temperature was changed from 193 K to 793 K with an increment of 100 K. To investigate the effect of temperature on...

Abstract Nano-indentation tests are important techniques in material science. Over the past two decades, many numerical approaches have been proposed to model and simulate nano-indentation process. In this paper, possibility of modeling process using a meshless technique, known as smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH), is explored. particular, SPH conducted ANSYS/LS-DYNA software three different ...

This paper aims to explore the effect of O2 on the nano-indentation of diamond cubic silicon using molecular dynamics simulation. Obtained with the aid of the Tersoff potential for Si–Si interactions and the Morse potential for all other interactions, the results show that on indentation, the O2 molecule in the appropriate position and orientation dissociates into oxygen atoms, penetrates into ...

Instrumented indentation test has been extensively applied to study the mechanical properties such as elastic modulus of different materials. The Oliver–Pharr method to measure the elastic modulus from an indentation test was originally developed for single phase materials. During a spherical indentation test on shape memory alloys (SMAs), both austenite and martensite phases exist and evolve i...

The possibility of a third phase, often referred to as the interphase, in polymer composites is well known, and there have been many attempts to characterise the mechanical properties of this region at the nanoscale. Despite the increasing resolution of nano-indentation and atomic force microscopy techniques, it is not always possible to identify thin interphases when the dimensions are similar...

In the present article, a new method for the determination of the hardening law using the load displacement curve, F–h, of a spherical indentation test is developed. This method is based on the study of the error between an experimental indentation curve and a number of finite elements simulation curves. For the smaller values of these errors, the error distribution shape is a valley, which is ...

In this paper, the numerical simulation for nano-indentation is performed to measure time-dependent behavior of polymeric films. The possibility to extract the relaxed shear modulus of the polymer is evaluated using a rigid ball indenter. The viscoelastic behavior of the polymer was represented by the standard model. The effects of Poisson’s ratio are also discussed.
