Excited states in (40)Si have been established by detecting gamma rays coincident with inelastic scattering and nucleon removal reactions on a liquid hydrogen target. The low excitation energy, 986(5) keV, of the 2(1)(+) state provides evidence of a weakening in the N=28 shell closure in a neutron-rich nucleus devoid of deformation-driving proton collectivity.

A highly-deformed rotational band has been identified in the N = Z nucleus 36 Ar. At high spin the band is observed to its presumed termination at I π = 16 + , while at low spin it has been firmly linked to previously known states in 36 Ar. Spins, parities, and absolute excitation energies have thus been determined throughout the band. Lifetime measurements establish a large low-spin quadrupole...

e rst entity in this comparison comprises the opening lines from Reinhard Bendix's relatively early aempt to justify the comparative method within sociological research: Like the concepts of other disciplines, sociological concepts should be universally applicable. e concept 'division of labor' , for instance, refers to the fact that the labor performed in a collectivity is specialized; the con...

The motion of the structure determining components is highly collective, both in amorphous solids and in undercooled liquids. This has been deduced from experimental low temperature data in the tunneling regime as well as from the vanishing isotope effect in diffusion in glasses and undercooled liquids. In molecular dynamics simulations of glasses one observes that both low frequency resonant v...

Bridging levels of "granularity" and "scale" are frequently cited as key problems for biomedical informatics. However, detailed accounts of what is meant by these terms are sparse in the literature. We argue for distinguishing two notions: "size range," which deals with physical size, and "collectivity," which deals with aggregations of individuals into collections, which have emergent properti...

This paper develops the idea of the sustainability episteme for the critical analysis of contemporary wildlife conservation. It takes forward recent work in conservation and morethan-human geographies that questions the biopolitical emphasis in conservation on protecting collectivities such as species. Drawing on empirical research on turtle conservation in India and on Foucault’s writings, it ...
