The 8p11 myeloproliferative syndrome (EMS), also referred to as stem cell leukemia/lymphoma, is a chronic myeloproliferative disorder that rapidly progresses into acute leukemia. Molecularly, EMS is characterized by fusion of various partner genes to the FGFR1 gene, resulting in constitutive activation of the tyrosine kinases in FGFR1. To date, no previous study has addressed the functional con...

Essential thrombocythemia is a chronic myeloproliferative disorder characterized by a sustained proliferation of megakaryocytes, which leads to increased numbers of circulating platelets. Hemorrhagic and/or thrombotic episodes are frequent, and thrombosis of both veins and arteries may develop. Vessels in unusual sites may be involved, e.g., the hepatic veins, mesenteric veins, and the dig...

EPP is normally an inherited disorder characterized by photosensitivity that starts in early childhood and results from overproduction of protoporphyrin secondary to ferrochelatase (FECH) deficiency. Severe li...

A myeloproliferative disorder, similar to agonogenic myeloid metaplasia, has been described in patients with cancer. Two patients with carcinoma of the lung are described who presented with such a disorder but in whom there was no evidence of bone marrow fibrosis and in one of whom there was no evidence of bone marrow infiltration by tumor. The possible mechanism of this association is discussed.

The median age at diagnosis is 60 years, and more than 90% of patients are diagnosed after age 40 years. Clinical manifestations include massive splenomegaly, progressive anemia, profound constitutional symptoms, and e...
