1. The virus of Bartonella muris anemia of splenectomized rats may be transmitted to normal young unoperated rats and rabbits. This confirms the observations of Ford and Eliot. 2. Trypanosoma lewisi infections in normal adult rats are accompanied by an anemia most marked at the height of the infection and the appearance of Bartonella muris bodies in the red blood cells. 3. In young rats Trypano...

AIMS The research was initiated to confirm earlier ultraviolet (u.v.) light inactivation studies performed on Giardia cysts using excystation as the viability indicator. Following this, a comparison of in vitro excystation and animal infectivity was performed for assessing cyst viability after exposure to low-pressure u.v. irradiation. METHODS AND RESULTS Cysts of Giardia muris were inactivat...

The effect of Giardia muris infection on the diarrheal response and gut mucosal antibody response to cholera toxin was examined in mice. The results obtained showed that the fluid accumulation in intestinal loops exposed to cholera toxin was increased in mice infected with a low number (5 X 10(4) ) of G. muris cysts compared with the response in noninfected mice. This effect was associated with...

Trichuris muris resides in intimate contact with its host, burrowing within cecal epithelial cells. However, whether the enterocyte itself responds innately to T. muris is unknown. This study investigated for the first time whether colonic intestinal epithelial cells (IEC) produce cytokines or chemokines following T. muris infection and whether divergence of the innate response could explain di...

The mange mite Notoedres muris is reported from a new host, the marsh rat (Holochilus brasiliensis) from Argentina. The infection involved alopecia and encrustations on the ears and face, and was treated successfully by a subcutaneous injection of ivermectin. The new record suggests that Notoedres muris has become self-maintaining within this marsh rat population.

Syphacia muris worm burdens were evaluated in the rat Rattus norvegicus of the strains Wistar (outbred), Low/M and AM/2/Torr (inbred), maintained conventionally in institutional animal houses in Brazil. Morphometrics and illustration data for S. muris recovered from Brazilian laboratory rats are provided for the first time since its proposition in 1935.

We report here the complete genome sequence of Ehrlichia muris strain AS145(T), which was isolated from a wild mouse in 1983 in Japan. E. muris establishes persistent infections in laboratory mice and is widely used as a surrogate pathogen in a murine model of ehrlichiosis.

introduction: ureaplasma uriealyticum is one of the most important causes of nongonococcal and nonspecific urethritis (ngu & nsu) in men. mycoplasma hominis too has a causal role in ngu & nsu. this study aimed to investigate whether it is possible to detect mycoplasma hominis and ureaplasma uriealyticum in first voided urine samples in men suffering from ngu & nsu without complaints of urethral...

Immunodeficiency, particularly antibody deficiency, predisposes to increased intensity and persistence of Giardia infections. Giardia-infected immunocompetent hosts produce serum and intestinal antibodies against Giardia trophozoites. The number of Giardia muris trophozoites, in mice with G. muris infection, is reduced by intra-duodenal administration of anti-G. muris antibody. Giardia intestin...

A disease syndrome referred to as infectious catarrh, encountered under natural conditions of exposure in a rat colony, was transmitted to selected animals and maintained for 5 years by nasal instillation or contact. During this period 37 passages were made in 156 rats, the rates of pneumonia, otitis media, and rhinitis being 28, 63, and 87 per cent, respectively. After the 12th passage, Brucel...
