Polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies to Mycoplasma pneumoniae protein P1 were nonreactive with whole-cell or soluble preparations of M. genitalium and M. gallisepticum. However, radioimmunoprecipitation performed with hyperimmune rabbit sera raised against each mycoplasma species indicated antigenic cross-reactivity between M. pneumoniae and M. genitalium.
A putative cytadhesin-related protein (PvpA) undergoing variation in its expression was identified in the avian pathogen Mycoplasma gallisepticum. The pvpA gene was cloned, expressed in Escherichia coli, and sequenced. It exhibits 54 and 52% homology with the P30 and P32 cytadhesin proteins of the human pathogens Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Mycoplasma genitalium, respectively. In addition, 50% ho...
Mycoplasma gallisepticum causes respiratory disease in avian species, but little is known about its mechanism(s) of pathogenesis. These studies were undertaken in order to develop genetic systems for analysis of potential virulence factors. M. gallisepticum was transformed with plasmids containing one of the gram-positive transposons Tn916 or Tn4001, which inserted randomly into the mycoplasmal...
Mycoplasma gallisepticum is the most economically significant mycoplasma pathogen of poultry, and has a world-wide distribution. In common with other mycoplasmas, M. gallisepticum is minute in size with minimal genetic information and with a total lack of a bacterial cell wall. These properties are reflected in a high degree of interdependence between M. gallisepticum and the host animal, and i...
The genus Mycoplasma relates to Gram-positive bacteria that lack a cell wall and are capable to cause chronic disease in humans and animals. Among the agents of infection and disease in domestic poultry and wild birds, Mycoplasma gallisepticum is the most important mycoplasma species, causing considerable losses in the poultry industry. In the present paper, we provide data on adaptation of M. ...
We report the construction of a physical map of the Mycoplasma gallisepticum S6 genome by field-inversion gel electrophoresis of DNA fragments generated by digestion of genomic DNA with rare-cutting restriction endonucleases. The size of the M. gallisepticum S6 genome was calculated to be approximately 1,054 kb. The loci of several genes have been assigned to the map by Southern hybridization u...
The helical ribosome structures of Mycoplasma gallisepticum have been analyzed by optical diffraction and the rotational symmetry technique. The helix repeat (510 A) is composed of 10 ribosomes in 3 turns. The rotational studies show some ribosome fine structure.
Despite attempts to control avian mycoplasmosis through management, vaccination, and surveillance, Mycoplasma gallisepticum continues to cause significant morbidity, mortality, and economic losses in poultry production. Live attenuated vaccines are commonly used in the poultry industry to control avian mycoplasmosis; unfortunately, some vaccines may revert to virulence and vaccine strains are g...
