Moisture diffusion and carbonation influence the behavior of multiple-leaf ancient masonry walls, producing during centuries a redistribution of stresses from the core of lime mortar concrete to the external cladding of stiff masonry. This is likely one of the causes of long-time damage of some ancient masonry towers. With these motivations, coupled processes of moisture diffusion, carbon dioxi...

Recently, nanomaterials (such as nanosilica) are receiving special attention because of their ability to improve the performance of concrete compared with traditional mineral admixtures. In this work, a number of specimens were prepared to study the behavior of cement mortar containing nanosilica. The cement replacement by nanosilica of 3% and 5% by weight of cement was used. The mechanical and...

This paper investigates the physicomechanical properties of mortar containing high volume of fly ash (FA) as partial replacement of cement in presence of copolymer latexes. Portland cement (PC) was partially replaced with 0, 10, 20, 30 50, and 60% FA. Copolymer latexes were used based on 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (2-HEA) and 2-hydroxymethylacrylate (2-HEMA). Testing included workability, setting ...

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is one of the most promising alternatives for the current state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical energy density and low production cost from the use of sulfur. However, the commercialization of Li-S batteries has been so far limited to the cyclability and the retention of active sulfur materials. Using co-electrospinning and physical vap...

The thioquinolobactin siderophore from Pseudomonas fluorescens ATCC 17400 utilizes a variation of the sulfur transfer chemistry found in thiamine and molydobterin biosynthesis. A JAMM motif protein cleaves the C-terminal amino acid residues following a diglycine moiety on a small sulfur carrier protein, and the modified C terminus is activated and sulfurylated, forming a thiocarboxylate.

Masonry bricks were widely used in construction of the walls most Chinese historical buildings. The low strength lime–clay mortar existing brick masonry has usually led to poor performance such as cracking and collapse during earthquakes. As composition modified oyster shell ash (MOSA mortar) with higher is similar that mortar, it can be partially replace original for buildings order improve th...

A novel method combining elemental sulfur and selenium was developed, yielding crystalline sulfur-selenium compounds. The compounds were melted, and an organic comonomer added. Once the organic comonomer was consumed, the viscous compound was vitrified and allowed to cool yielding organic-inorganic hybrid polymers that are termed Organically Modified Chalcogenide (ORMOCHALC) polymers.

The orientation of steel fibers in magnetically driven concrete and magnetically driven mortar was experimentally studied in this paper using a magnetic method. In the magnetically driven concrete, a steel slag was used to replace the coarse aggregate. In the magnetically driven mortar, steel slag and iron sand were used to replace the fine aggregate. A device was established to provide the mag...
