The mechanical behaviour of the oxide film that develops at metal-air interface molten A356 aluminum alloy is investigated in relation to oxidation level. Based on two previous papers - first one focusing chemical aspects process liquid surface aluminum, second its characterization, present paper aims reconciling these approaches usually considered separately literature and proposes a stand-alo...

A “dry” conical soap film on a cubical frame is not stable. Recent experimental evidence seems to indicate that adding liquid to form Plateau borders stabilizes the conical film, perhaps to arbitrarily low liquid fractions. This paper presents numerical simulation evidence that the the wet cone is unstable for low enough liquid fraction, with the critical liquid fraction being about 0.000278.

Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) provides an approximate description of a great variety of processes in space physics. Accurate numerical solutions of the MHD equations are still a challenge, but in the past decade a number of robust methods have appeared. Once these techniques made the direct solution of MHD equations feasible, a number of global three-dimensional models were designed and applied to...

The dynamic interaction between a local probe and a viscous liquid film, which provokes the deformation of the latter, has been studied. The pressure difference across the air-liquid interface is calculated with a modified Young-Laplace equation, which takes into account the effects of gravity, surface tension, and liquid film-substrate and probe-liquid attractive interaction potentials. This p...

An extruded composite food packaging film containing pectin, polylactic acids (PLAs) and nisin was developed to inhibit Listeria monocytogenes. The mechanical properties and surface structure of the film were also examined. Cells of L. monocytogenes were reduced by 2.1, 4.5 and 3.7 log units mL by the pectin plus PLA (pectin ⁄PLA) film containing nisin (1000 IU mL of tested liquid) in Brain Hea...

We consider the deposition of a film of viscous liquid on a flat plate being withdrawn from a bath, experimentally and theoretically. For any plate speed U, there is a range of "thick" film solutions whose thickness scales like U{1/2} for small U. These solutions are realized for a partially wetting liquid, while for a perfectly wetting liquid the classical Landau-Levich-Derjaguin film is obser...

The entrainment of air by advancing contact lines is studied by plunging a solid plate into a very viscous liquid. Above a threshold velocity, we observe the formation of an extended air film, typically 10 microns thick, which subsequently decays into air bubbles. Exploring a large range of viscous liquids, we find an unexpectedly weak dependence of entrainment speed on liquid viscosity, pointi...

The ability to form tiny droplets of liquids and control their movements is important in printing or patterning, chemical reactions and biological assays. So far, such nanofluidic capabilities have principally used components such as channels, nozzles or tubes, where a solid encloses the transported liquid. Here, we show that liquids can flow along the outer surface of solid nanowires at a scal...

In this work, exploratory numerical simulations of liquid–gas flows in horizontal pipes are conducted for three different sets of conditions in the annular and stratified-annular flow regimes. Careful dimensional analysis is used to choose governing parameters in a way that yields flows that are relevant to realistic engineering applications, while remaining computationally tractable. Statistic...

The development of solid plasma-facing components (PFCs) that can withstand high heat and particle fluxes during normal and abnormal events has proven to be a difficult task for future power-producing magnetically confined reactors. Solid PFC cannot be reliably used because of the large erosion losses during normal and off-normal events such as disruptions and their consequences. The use of liq...
