A novel facultatively methylotrophic, Gram-negative, rod-shaped bacterium, designated strain S2R03-9(T), was isolated from jeotgal, a traditional Korean fermented seafood. The organism was strictly aerobic, motile by means of a single polar flagellum, non-sporulating and catalase- and oxidase-positive. Strain S2R03-9(T) grew in the presence of 0-1 % (w/v) NaCl and at pH 6.0-10.0, with optimum g...

Microorganisms of the genus Methylobacterium are facultative methylotrophic, gram-negative rods that are ubiquitous in nature and rarely cause human disease, mostly in subjects with preexisting causes of immune depression. Methylobacterium fujisawaense, first proposed as a new species in 1988, has never been reported as a bacterial agent of human infections so far. Here we describe a case of M....

The dichloromethane (DCM)-utilizing facultative methylotroph Methylobacterium sp. DM4 was shown to contain three plasmids with approximate sizes of 120 kb, 40 kb and 8 kb. Curing experiments suggested that the DCM-utilization character was correlated with the possession of an intact 120 kb plasmid. The DCM-utilization genes were cloned on the broad-host-range vector pVK100. Plasmid pME1510, a r...

The genus Methylobacterium comprises pink-pigmented facultative methylotrophic (PPFM) bacteria, known to be an important plant-associated bacterial group. Species of this group, described as plant-nodulating, have the dual capacity of producing cytokinin and enzymes, such as pectinase and cellulase, involved in systemic resistance induction and nitrogen fixation under specific plant environment...

Strains of a pink-pigmented Methylobacterium sp. are effective nitrogen- (N2) fixing microsymbionts of species of the African crotalarioid genus Listia. Strain WSM2598 is an aerobic, motile, Gram-negative, non-spore-forming rod isolated in 2002 from a Listia bainesii root nodule collected at Estcourt Research Station in South Africa. Here we describe the features of Methylobacterium sp. WSM2598...

Methylobacterium extorquens AM1 pqqEF are genes required for synthesis of pyrroloquinoline quinone (PQQ). The nucleotide sequence of these genes indicates PqqE belongs to an endopeptidase family, including PqqF of Klebsiella pneumoniae, and M. extorquens AM1 PqqF has low identity with the same endopeptidase family. M. extorquens AM1 pqqE complemented a K. pneumoniae pqqF mutant.

The facultative methylotroph Methylobacterium extorquens AM1 possesses two pterin-dependent pathways for C(1) transfer between formaldehyde and formate, the tetrahydrofolate (H(4)F)-linked pathway and the tetrahydromethanopterin (H(4)MPT)-linked pathway. Both pathways are required for growth on C(1) substrates; however, mutants defective for the H(4)MPT pathway reveal a unique phenotype of bein...

A new gene, qscR, encoding a LysR-type transcriptional regulator that is a homolog of CbbR, has been characterized from the facultative methylotroph Methylobacterium extorquens AM1 and shown to be the major regulator of the serine cycle, the specific C1 assimilation pathway. The qscR mutant was shown to be unable to grow on C1 compounds, and it lacked the activity of serine-glyoxylate aminotran...

An isolated 5.2-kb fragment of Methylobacterium extorquens AM1 DNA was found to contain a gene cluster involved in methylamine utilization. Analysis of polypeptides synthesized in an Escherichia coli T7 expression system showed that five genes were present. Two of the genes encoded the large and small subunits of methylamine dehydrogenase, and a third encoded amicyanin, the presumed electron ac...
