Acquired or toxic methemoglobinemia is an uncommon complication of topically administered anesthetic agents in patients of all ages-but particularly in pediatric and elderly patients. This report describes a case of acquired methemoglobinemia that occurred after benzocaine spray was applied orally to a 69-year-old white woman weighing 175 lb who was undergoing transesophageal echocardiography. ...
OBJECTIVE To study clinical profile and outcome in patients with methemoglobinemia following exposure to toxic colors during Holi festival. METHODS This retrospective study included 112 children (5 to 12 years) admitted with methemoglobinemia after playing Holi. Clinical and treatment details were reviewed. RESULTS The common symptoms were giddiness, vomiting and headache. Treatment include...
Methemoglobinemia is a potentially fatal condition at level of more than 70%. It occurs when the ferrous iron inHaemoglobin oxidized to ferric iron, forming methemoglobin (MetHb), causing decreased capability hemoglobinto bind and deliver oxygen tissues. has been linked wide array substances, includingfungicides industrial chemicals. We describe patient who developed high MetHb 70.7%, afterdeli...
METHEMOGLOBIN (metHb), resulting from the oxidation of iron in hemoglobin from the ferrous state to ferric state, cannot bind oxygen and thereby leads to a displacement of the hemoglobin dissociation curve to the left. It can, therefore, impair tissue oxygen delivery. Methemoglobinemia, which is characterized by the presence of a higher-than-normal level of metHb, either can be congenital (due ...
We report a case of acute methemoglobinemia and anemia in a patient with Mycoplasma pneumoniae pneumonia. We suggest that M. pneumoniae secretes a putative protein that can induce methemoglobin in red blood cells. Thus, Mycoplasma pneumoniae may induce methemoglobinemia in patients who have low oxygen saturation and anemia.
Toxic methemoglobinemia is an uncommon blood disorder induced by exposure to certain oxidizing agents and drugs. In severe cases, this condition may rapidly lead to major cardiopulmonary compromise and constitutes an emergency requiring prompt recognition and early management. We report an unusual case of severe toxic methemoglobinemia following wide cutaneous application of a pomade containing...
Communications to the Editor tolmetric analysis) is elevated. Severe methemoglobinemia is rapidly reversed by intravenous administration (If the reducing agent methylene blue (1-2 mg/kg in a 1 percent solution administered over 5 min).23 Because of the urgency (If treating severe methemoglobinemia, particularly in patients who have underlying lung disease, bronchocopists are well advised to mai...
Toxic methemoglobinemia is a potentially life-threatening condition. It develops generally as a complication of the use of local anesthetics. Prompt recognition and quick institution of therapy is of utmost importance. In this paper, a case of methemoglobinemia that occurred after lidocaine application for circumcision is presented in order to increase awareness among clinicians about this cond...
