Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates (n=183), collected from bacteraemic patients hospitalised in Sao Paulo Hospital (Brazil) during 2000-2001, were screened for susceptibility to antimicrobial agents. The polymyxins were the most active compounds (100% susceptibility), followed by amikacin and cefepime (59.0%), meropenem (57.4%), and imipenem and gentamicin (55.2%). Imipenem-resistant isolates were...

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an important nosocomial pathogen is difÞ cult to treat because of high antimicrobial resistance.[1] The common form of resistance is mediated by lack of drug penetration and / or carbapenem hydrolyzing ß-lactamases.[2] Detection of metallo ß lactamase (MBL)producing P. aeruginosa is crucial for the optimal treatment of patients. The present study was undertaken to study ...

Background and Objective: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a causative agent of nosocomial infections. Metallo-beta-lactamases (MBLs) are considered among the most crucial resistant agents of Pseudomonas aeruginosa to carbapenem. Because of the important role of carbapenemes in the treatment of Pseudomonas infections, in this study, the Pseudomonas aeruginosa producing metallo-beta-lactamases were inv...

Background and purpose: The prevalence of antibiotic resistant P. aeruginosa strains became a major problem in treatment of burn patients. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of blaIMP, blaVIM and oprD genes among P. aeruginosa isolated from hospitalized burn patients in Tehran Shahid Motahari Hospital, Iran. Materials and methods: This descriptive study was performed on P...

INTRODUCTION Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa is associated with high mortality rates. The metallo-beta-lactamases (MBLs) are emerging enzymes that hydrolyze virtually all beta-lactams. We aimed to assess P. aeruginosa HAP mortality in a setting of high-rate MBL production METHODS A prospective cohort study was performed at two tertiary-care teaching hospitals. ...

Background & objectives: Members of the family enterobacteriaceae comprise the most common gram-negative isolates in microbiology laboratories. Amongst these members, multiple antibiotic-resistant isolates including those producing extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) and AmpC β-lactamases (AmpC) have increased steadily. Further, metallo-β-lactamase (MBL) producing strains are also recently de...

INTRODUCTION Imipenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa resulting from metallo-β-lactamases has been reported to be an important cause of nosocomial infection and is a critical therapeutic problem worldwide, especially in the case of bacteremia. OBJECTIVES To determine the frequency of metallo-β-lactamases among imipenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolates and to compare methods of pheno...

The performance of Etest KPC and MBL strips (bioMérieux) was evaluated as compared to other phenotypic tests for detecting carbapenemases of the KPC-type and metallo-β-lactamases, respectively, on 133 well-characterized enterobacterial isolates. KPC and meropenem-containing MP/MPI Etest had high sensitivity (>92 %) and specificity (>97 %).

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an important cause of infection, especially in immunocompromised patients. In this regard, strains producing carbapenemases, mainly metallo-β-lactamases (MBLs), have become a significant public health concern. Here, we present the complete annotated genome sequence (65.7 kb) of an F8-related lytic myovirus (Pbunalikevirus genus) that infects MBL-producing P. aeruginosa...

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to characterize the KPC-type carbapenem-hydrolysing beta-lactamase, extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) and class 1 integrons among nosocomial Klebsiella pneumoniae isolated in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. METHODS MICs were determined and isolates were screened for ESBLs, metallo-beta-lactamases (MBLs) and class A carbapenemase-producing phenotypes. The m...
