Glutamine synthetase exists in at least two related forms, GSI and GSII, the sequences of which have been used in evolutionary molecular clock studies. GSI has so far been found exclusively in bacteria, and GSII has been found predominantly in eukaryotes. To date, only a minority of bacteria, including rhizobia, have been shown to express both forms of GS. The sequences of equivalent internal f...

31 32 In total 14 strains of gram-negative, rod-shaped bacteria were isolated from Sophora 33 longicarinata and Sophora microphylla root nodules and authenticated as rhizobia on these 34 hosts. Based on the 16S rRNA gene phylogeny, they were shown to belong to the genus 35 Mesorhizobium, and the S. longicarinata strains were most closely related to Mesorhizobium 36 amorphae ACCC 19665 (99.8 – 9...

In the present study 14 bacterial strains were isolated from root nodule of Crotolaria junceae L. from 4 different sites of Assam. The isolates were investigated for their morphological characteristics. Three different confirmatory tests were performed with the isolates. The isolates were also investigated for their biochemical characteristics and compared with biochemical characteristics of re...

The isolation and characterization of six rhizobial strains isolated from Anagyris latifolia, a shrub legume endemic to the Canary Islands, is reported in this study. The isolates were characterized by 16S-ARDRA, and sequencing of the ribosomal 16SrRNA gene, the 16S-23SrDNA intergenic spacer region, and the housekeeping gene for glutamine synthetase II (glnII). The phylogenies based on the thre...

MrtR, a LuxR homolog in Mesorhizobium tianshanense, is important for symbiosis. We found that MrtR requires its cognate N-acylhomoserine lactone for forming dimers, binding to a single DNA site and activating the downstream promoter. However, MrtR is able to fold independently of its ligand.

Deletion of both alanine dehydrogenase genes (aldA) in Mesorhizobium loti resulted in the loss of AldA enzyme activity from cultured bacteria and bacteroids but had no effect on the symbiotic performance of Lotus corniculatus plants. Thus, neither indeterminate pea nodules nor determinate L. corniculatus nodules export alanine as the sole nitrogen secretion product.

Here, we present the draft genome of Mesorhizobium loti strain LU, a soil bacterium capable of degrading the trihydroxamate siderophore deferrioxamine B to its constituent monohydroxamic acids. Genome size was 6,399,828 bp, with a GC content of 61.5%. This draft genome consists of 35 scaffolds, with an N50 of 389,921 bp.
