The meridian is a concept central to traditional Chinese medical techniques such as acupuncture. There is no physically verifiable anatomical or histological basis for the existence of meridians. In Chinese medicine, the meridians are channels along which the energy of the psychological system is considered to flow. It has been proven that the resistance along the meridian channels is lower com...
Introduction The peripheral refractive error of the human eye has been hypothesized to be a major stimulus for the development of its central refractive error. Aim The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in the peripheral refractive error across horizontal, vertical and two diagonal meridians in emmetropic and low, moderate and high myopic adults. Subjects and methods Thirt...
PURPOSE To determine the feasibility of adapting confocal scanning laser (CSL) tomography of the optic disc for quantitative evaluation of papilledema in pseudotumor cerebri (PTC). METHODS Confocal scanning laser tomography of the optic disc was performed in 11 patients with diagnosed PTC and 12 visually normal control subjects of similar age. In five patients with active papilledema, CSL tom...
We propose a method of calculating the corneal asphericity (Q) and analyze the characteristics of the anterior corneal shape using the tangential radius. Fifty-eight right eyes of 58 subjects were evaluated using the Orbscan II corneal topographer. The Q-values of the flat principal semi-meridians calculated by the sagittal radius were compared to those by the tangential radius. Variation in th...
BACKGROUND According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the vital energy flows through a system of channels also called meridians. Generally accepted proof for meridians cannot be considered as being given. Goal of this study was to examine whether possible stimulation-induced meridian-like structures, as recently described by other authors, can be visualized and objectified simultaneously a...
PURPOSE To compare the course and magnitude of change on the horizontal and vertical meridians of the cornea after 5 different incisions for cataract: extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE), 6 mm superior scleral tunnel (6Sup), 3 mm superior scleral tunnel (3Sup), 3 mm temporal scleral tunnel (3Temp), and 3 mm temporal corneal incision (3Cor). METHODS Retrospective chart review of 665 cases...
PURPOSE To determine the biometry of anterior segment dimensions of the human eye on both horizontal and vertical meridians with extended scan depth optical coherence tomography (OCT) during accommodation. METHODS Twenty pre-presbyopic volunteers, aged between 24 and 30, were recruited. The ocular anterior segment of each subject was imaged using an extended scan depth OCT under non- and 3.0 ...
BACKGROUND The scientific basis for acupuncture meridians is unknown. Past studies have suggested that acupuncture meridians are physiologically characterized by low electrical impedance and anatomically associated with connective tissue planes. We are interested in seeing whether acupuncture meridians are associated with lower electrical impedance and whether ultrasound-derived measures--speci...
In recent years, an increasing number of studies has been conducted on the biophysical characteristics of the meridians and acupoints in humans and animals. The authors aim to further illustrate the objective existence and superficial locations of the meridians in various species of animals. Twelve sheep, ten goats, thirteen pigs, eleven cats, eight rabbits and seven donkeys were used to measur...
We show that in some sense, “most” knots have meridian of length strictly less than 4. We do so by finding geometric information on the cusp shapes of a class of links called generalized augmented links. Since any knot can be obtained by an explicit Dehn filling on one of these links, the geometric information on these links gives geometric information on new classes of knots and links.
