Nonmusicians remember vocal melodies (i.e., sung to la la) better than instrumental melodies. If greater exposure to the voice contributes to those effects, then long-term experience with instrumental timbres should elicit instrument-specific advantages. Here we evaluate this hypothesis by comparing pianists with other musicians and nonmusicians. We also evaluate the possibility that absolute p...

This paper describes an efficient method for the identification of the melody voice from the frame-wise updated magnitude and frequency values of tone objects. Most state of the art algorithms employ a probabilistic framework to find the best succession of melody tones. Often such methods fail, if there are several musical voices with a comparable strength in the audio mixture. In this paper, w...

the cuckoo search algorithm is a recently developedmeta-heuristic optimization algorithm, which is suitable forsolving optimization problems. to enhance the accuracy andconvergence rate of this algorithm, an improved cuckoo searchalgorithm is proposed in this paper. normally, the parametersof the cuckoo search are kept constant. this may lead todecreasing the efficiency of the algorithm. to cop...

This paper describes our submission for the audio melody extraction task of the Music Information Retrieval Evaluation eXchange (MIREX 2014). Our algorithm first separates the vocal spectra from polyphonic sound spectra. Melody extraction and vocal activity detection are applied to the separated spectra.

In this paper, an evolutionary algorithm is used to calculate optimal extensions of a base melody line by statistical interval-distance minimization. Applying an evolutionary algorithm for solving such an optimization problem reveals the effect of audible convergence, when iterations of the optimization process, which represent sub-optimal melody lines, are combined to a musical piece. An examp...

This paper presents first steps towards a simple, robust computational model of automatic melody identification. Based on results from music psychology that indicate a relationship between melodic complexity and a listener’s attention, we postulate a relationship between musical complexity and the probability of a musical line to be perceived as the melody. We introduce a simple measure of melo...

This paper presents our on-going work to improve the lyric generation component of the Automatic Lyric Generation system for the Tamil Language. An earlier version of the system used an n-gram based model to generate lyrics that match the given melody. This paper identifies some of the deficiencies in the melody analysis and text generation components of the earlier system and explains the new ...

Recently a great attention is paid to content-based multimedia retrieval that enables users to find and locate audio-visual materials according to the intrinsic characteristics of the target. Query-by-humming (QBH) is also an application that makes retrieval based on major characteristics of music, that is, "melody". There have been some researches on QBH system, most of which are to retrieve m...
