Hydatid disease is a parasitic disease caused by the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus. Most common sites are liver, lungs, and brain. The disease is rarely present in the mediastinum. We report the rare instance of a 52-year-old female who presented with hydatid disease in the uncommon location of posterior mediastinum.
Hydatid disease remains a serious health problem for the Mediterranean countries, such as Turkey. Living in a rural area is an important risk factor for the disease. Hydatid cysts are usually located in the liver, lung, and brain. Mediastinal hydatid disease is very rare that have been only anecdotally in the literature. The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic ...
Hydatid disease is caused through Echinococcus granulosus infection. Hydatid disease remains endemic in developing countries. The majority of cases involve the lungs or liver. We report the case of a patient diagnosed with concurrent mediastinal and cardiac cysts. In this patient, the Octopus IV cardiac stabilizer was used to rotate the heart after the excision of the mediastinal cyst, enabling...
Central airway stenosis caused by compression due to mediastinal cyst is rare. Direct real-time endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA) is a minimally invasive method for tissue sampling of the mediastinum. Using this new therapeutic modality, the mediastinum can be punctured repeatedly and safely under local anesthesia with real-time guidance. Cystic lesion...
Mediastinal enteric cysts are a rare occurrence among adults and are usually asymptomatic. In most cases they are an incidental finding in the right hemi-mediastinum and are associated with vertebral anomalies. We report the unusual case of a 23 year old male who had a mediastinal mass on chest X-ray as an incidental finding. Chest Computed Tomography (CT) scan revealed no vertebral anomalies a...
A 25-year-old female presented with sudden-onset dyspnoea. A chest X-ray showed total atelectasis on the left haemithorax (Fig. 1). A chest computed tomography (CT) revealed a cystic mass in the posterior mediastinum that compressed the left main bronchus (Fig. 2). Pathological examination confirmed a broncho-genic cyst in the posterior mediastinum. Figure 1: Chest X-ray showing total atelectas...
Mediastinal enteric duplication cysts are a rare congenital malformation encountered mainly in neonates and infants. It is a distinct entity within the family of foregut duplication cysts. It can present with respiratory distress due to mass effect and hence surgical excision is the preferred treatment. Histologically, it is characterised by a double layered smooth muscle wall with intestinal l...
