Two cases of acute intussusception in older children with cystic fibrosis are reported. Both cases presented with symptoms and signs consistent with meconium ileus equivalent, which delayed the final diagnosis. Both cases required abdominal surgery but made full and uneventful recoveries.
Meconium ileus at birth, distal intestinal obstruction syndrome (DIOS), and constipation are an interrelated group of intestinal obstruction syndromes with a variable severity of obstruction that occurs in cystic fibrosis patients. Long-term follow-up studies show that today meconium ileus is not a risk factor for impaired nutritional status, pulmonary function, or survival. DIOS and constipati...
Correspondence to: Mr SJ K Holmes. Introduction There are now sufficient data on the sonographic appearance ofnormal fetal gut to allow intestinal abnormality in the antenatal period to be diagnosed, although as yet relatively little attention has been paid to the implications for the child. We present eight such cases. Six children were found to have midgut atresia, three of whom had evidence ...
RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to critically appraise and compare the diagnostic performance of imaging modalities that are used for the diagnosis of upper and lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract obstruction in neonates and infants. METHODS A focused clinical question was constructed and the literature was searched using the patient, intervention, comparison, outcome met...
an altered secretion from the mucous glands was the basis of this disorder. Two possible causes for this alteration were suggested: first, deficiency of mucus, and secondly, excess of vagal activity, the latter being due to autonomic imbalance in the control ofmucous gland secretions. No further evidence was produced to support these theories. Bodian (1952), in his survey of cases purely from t...
While much perinatal gastrointestinal pathology is concerned with confirmation of diagnoses, such as necrotizing enterocolitis, meconium ileus and intestinal atresia in surgically resected specimens, there are two clinical situations in the neonatal period in which the primary diagnosis rests with the histopathologist. The first is constipation (which usually presents as delayed passage of meco...
A case of meconium ileus equivalent in a 25-year-old woman with cystic fibrosis is reported and the pathology of this condition is described. On gross examination the lumen of the terminal ileum was completely obstructed by a mass of inspissated faecal material with a putty-like consistency. The principal microscopic findings were plugging of the mucosal crypts with mucoid secretion, distention...
