This paper examines optimal redistribution in a model with high and low-skilled individuals with heterogeneous tastes for labor, that either work or not. With such double heterogeneity, traditional Welfarist criteria including Utilitarianism fail to take the compensation-responsibility trade-off into account. As a response, several other criteria have been proposed in the literature. This paper...

Invasive cervical root resorption is a relatively uncommon form of external root resorption. Creeping attachment is defined as postoperative coronal migration of the gingival margin. We describe a case of invasive cervical root resorption following coronal shift of interdental papillae 15 years after modified Widman flap surgery.

The work presented here addresses the issue of tuning PD controllers for controlling integrating plus deadtime (IPDT) processes using settling time and gain and phase margin specifications. Tuning formulae are derived for PD controller being used for controlling IPDT processes. Simulations have been carried out to determine the effectiveness of the tuning formulae. Also, comparison between prop...

This paper investigate the results of distributing the delay of a single feedback system. To distribute the delayed feedback, the single delay is replaced by the sum of two distinct delays with the same e↵ective delay. The statistical properties of the new distribution function in the feedback, namely the sum of two delta functions, are used to quantify the e↵ectiveness of delay distribution. W...

Mobile manipulators operating in eld environments will be required to perform tasks on uneven terrain which may cause the system to approach, or achieve, a dangerous tipover instability. To avoid tipover in an automatic system, or to provide a human operator with an indication of proximity to tipover, it is necessary to de ne a measure of stability margin. This work presents a new tipover stabi...

We explore the effects of trade costs on markups by building a new model consistent with three stylized facts: exporters charge higher markups, markups increase when starting to export, and domestic and foreign sales are negatively correlated, which suggests decreasing returns. We calibrate the model to Chilean data, and simulate reductions in trade costs. Most markups increase along the intens...

To classify time series by nearest neighbor, we need to specify or learn a distance. We consider several variations of the Mahalanobis distance and the related Large Margin Nearest Neighbor Classification (LMNN). We find that the conventional Mahalanobis distance is counterproductive. However, both LMNN and the class-based diagonal Mahalanobis distance are competitive.

OBJECTIVE To assess and compare the plaque removal efficacy of five different Oral-B manual toothbrushes: CrossAction Pro-Health (CAPH), CrossAction (CA), Exceed (EX), Advantage 123 (ADV 123), and Indicator (IND). METHODS This was a single-use, five-treatment, examiner-blind, randomized, five-period (visit) crossover study, with 10 different treatment sequences (groups) that determined the or...

In the framework of agnostic learning, one of the main open problems of the theory of multi-category pattern classification is the characterization of the way the complexity varies with the number C of categories. More precisely, if the classifier is characterized only through minimal learnability hypotheses, then the optimal dependency on C that an upper bound on the probability of error shoul...

Many statutory solvency requirements, e.g. the system prescribed by the EU, do not take into account the distribution of the investments. In practice, however, an adequate solvency margin of an insurance company depends strongly on the investment portfolio. This paper describes how the sufficient level of the solvency margin can be estimated. In this, only the margin depending on the company’s ...
