Burkholderia pseudomallei, a gram-negative bacillus found in soil and water, is the causative agent of melioidosis. It can produce a biofilm, which increases resistance to antibacterial agents. Bacteriophages (phages) have been suggested as alternative antibacterial agents. In this study, the ability of six phages (family Myoviridae) to lyse B. pseudomallei isolates was examined using a micropl...
Quorum sensing is a microbial signaling process that relies on the production, release, and response to extracellular molecules called autoinducers. This Review covers quorum-sensing systems controlled by pyrazine-type autoinducer, 3,5-dimethyl-pyrazin-2-ol (DPO). The we cover span human pathogen Vibrio cholerae, where DPO regulates pathogenicity biofilm formation, phage VP882, controls lytic d...
Natural outbreaks of multidrug-resistant microorganisms can cause widespread devastation, and several can be used or engineered as agents of bioterrorism. From a biosecurity standpoint, the capacity to detect and then efficiently control, within hours, the spread and the potential pathological effects of an emergent outbreak, for which there may be no effective antibiotics or vaccines, become k...
BACKGROUND Phages infecting marine picocyanobacteria often carry a psbA gene, which encodes a homolog to the photosynthetic reaction center protein, D1. Host encoded D1 decays during phage infection in the light. Phage encoded D1 may help to maintain photosynthesis during the lytic cycle, which in turn could bolster the production of deoxynucleoside triphosphates (dNTPs) for phage genome replic...
Shiga toxin 2 (Stx2) from the foodborne pathogen Escherichia coli O157:H7 is encoded on a temperate bacteriophage. Toxin-encoding phages from C600::933W and from six clinical E. coli O157:H7 isolates were characterized for PCR polymorphisms, phage morphology, toxin production, and lytic and lysogenic infection profiles on O157 and non-O157 serotype E. coli. The phages were found to be highly va...
Objective(s): During the last years with increasing resistant bacteria to the most antibiotics bacteriophages are suggested as appropriate treatment option. To investigate lytic activity of bacteriophages there are indirect microbial procedures and direct methods. The present study to complement microbial procedures and investigate ultra-structural characteristics of infection bacterium-phage u...
Of the twelve lytic bacteriophages recovered from five different fermenting cucumber tanks that were inoculated with Pediococcus sp. LA0281, a lytic phage, phips05, was characterized in the present study. The plaques were mostly clear and round-shaped on the lawn of starter strain, indicating lytic phage. Overall appearance indicated that it belongs to the Siphoviridae family or Bradley's group...
Relevance. Bacteriophage preparations are a promising tool for the prevention and treatment of zoonoses. The effectiveness use phage at different stages food production has been proven: in cultivation animals, processing their slaughter products sanitation finished from causative agent salmonellosis. creation an effective capable protecting piglets salmonellosis during period high risk infectio...
The genome of Cronobacter sakazakii podovirus vB_CsaP_GAP227 was fully sequenced. The DNA of this lytic phage consists of 41,796 bp and has a G+C content of 55.7%. Forty-nine open reading frames and no tRNAs were identified. This phage is related to Yersinia phages ϕR8-01 and ϕ80-18 and Aeromonas phage phiAS7.
