We describe Thurston's ending lamination conjecture for Kleinian groups, and discuss the relationship of this conjecture to questions of rigidity, deformation and topological dynamics for Kleinian groups. We give a solution for the conjecture in a special case, and conclude with a collection of questions and conjectures raised by our approach.
