Iron deposition in the brain is a prominent feature of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recently, peripheral iron measures have also been shown to be associated with AD status. However, it is not known whether these associations are causal: do elevated or depleted iron levels throughout life have an effect on AD risk? We evaluate the effects of peripheral iron on AD risk using a genetic profile score ...

We present first results from a 325 ks observation of the Seyfert 1 galaxy MCG–6-30-15 with XMM-Newton and BeppoSAX. The strong, broad, skewed iron line is clearly detected and is well characterised by a steep emissivity profile within 6rg (i.e. 6GM/c) and a flatter profile beyond. The inner radius of the emission appears to lie at about 2rg, consistent with results reported from both an earlie...

Recent X-ray observations have shown evidence for exceptionally broad and skewed iron Kα emission lines from several accreting black hole systems. The lines are assumed to be due to fluorescence of the accretion disk illuminated by a surrounding corona and require a steep emissivity profile increasing in to the innermost radius. This appears to question both standard accretion disc theory and t...

[1] Seawater dissolved iron isotope ratios (dFe) have been measured in the North Atlantic near Bermuda. In a full-depth profile, seawater dissolved dFe is isotopically heavy compared to crustal values throughout the water column (dFeIRMM-014 = +0.30‰ to +0.71‰). Iron isotope ratios are relatively homogenous in the upper water column (between +0.30‰ to +0.45‰ above 1500 m), and dFe increases bel...

Intravenous iron therapy is a useful treatment for the rapid correction of iron deficiency anaemia and can be used to avoid or reduce the requirement for allogeneic blood transfusion. Several intravenous iron preparations are available commercially which differ in cost, mode of administration and side effect profile. There are few data directly comparing the efficacy of these preparations. In t...

Regulation of iron absorption by duodenal enterocytes is essential for the maintenance of homeostasis by preventing iron deficiency or overload. Despite the identification of a number of genes implicated in iron absorption and its regulation, it is likely that further factors remain to be identified. For that purpose, we used a global transcriptomic approach, using the CaCo-2 cell line as an in...

Background and purpose: High blood pressure is a common complication of pregnancy which is responsible for maternal morbidity and mortality. In some studies, abnormality in iron parameters has been reported in preeclampsia. Also, increased serum ferritin levels (that reflect body iron status) early in preeclampsia compared with normal pregnancy have been reported. Some researches, however, indi...

Flourescent iron line profiles currently provide the best diagnostic for active galactic nuclei (AGN) engine geometries. Here we construct a method for calculating the relativistic iron line profile from an arbitrarily warped accretion disc, illuminated from above and below by hard X-ray sources. This substantially generalises previous calculations of reprocessing by accretion discs by includin...

Iron is an essential chemical element for human life. However, in some pathological conditions, such as hereditary hemochromatosis type 1 (HH1), iron overload induces the production of reactive oxygen species that may lead to lipid peroxidation and a change in the plasma-membrane lipid profile. In this study, we investigated whether iron overload interferes with the Na,K-ATPase activity of the ...

INTRODUCTION Nutritional anaemia in India is common morbidity seen in late adolescent and young female population. There are many conflicting opinions regarding dosage of iron folic acid supplementation for managing this simple nutritional deficiency disorder. Hence, this 'Randomized Controlled Trial' was undertaken in adolescent girls suffering from Iron Deficiency Anaemia visiting 'Urban Heal...
