We present a rare situation in which two mediastinal tumors of different topology and histology were found during the resection of an extensive mediastinal tumor in an asymptomatic patient. Different histologies within the same mass have been reported, although, to our knowledge, there have been no reports of different tumors at distinct locations. Thymomas and intrathoracic goiters account for...

Pleuropulmonary blastoma (PPB) is a rare, malignant intrathoracic tumor that occurs mostly in children before 5 years old. It consists about 15% of all primary pediatric pulmonary tumors and shows various mesenchymal components. This case describes the incidental finding and surgical removal of an 1.8-kg liposarcoma in the anterior mediastinum. These tumors are very rare and would normally present with symptoms of intrathoracic compression; however, this patient was completely asymptomatic. The case presentation and treatment rationale are described along with a brief review of existing literature.

Currently available methods for detection of tumors in vivo such as X-ray, computed tomography, and ultrasonography are noninvasive and have been well studied; the images, however, are not specific for tumors. Direct optical imaging of tumor cells in vivo that can clearly distinguish them from surrounding normal tissues may be clinically useful. Here, we describe a new approach to visualizing t...

Results The mean age was 42,6 ± 16,4 years, with male/female ratio of 0.77. The mean postoperative hospital stay was 8,5 ± 2,52 days and the correlation between tumor size and hospital stay was 0.005. The mean size of the tumors was 13.31 ± 5,4 cm. Correlation between age and tumor size 3.319 and between age and hospital stay 0.032. We performed complete resection via postero-lateral approach w...

Schwannomas are tumors that are typically benign. They are derived from Schwann cells (glial cells of the peripheral nervous system that serve to separate and isolate nerve cells from adjacent structures). The most common type of schwannoma is a benign tumor of cranial nerve VIII and is referred to as an acoustic neuroma. When extradural, such tumors usually present as masses that can invade ad...

Here, we describe a case of colonic sarcoidosis that developed over a 7-year period of observation of intrathoracic sarcoidosis. The patient was asymptomatic, but colonoscopy showed multiple elevated lesions mimicking submucosal tumors in several areas of the colon. The specimens obtained by biopsy showed noncaseating granuloma, suggesting sarcoidosis. The observations in the present case indic...
