OBJECTIVE To discuss the significance and the short-term effect of bone puncture technique in transiliac approach to intervertebral endoscopic discectomy for the treatment of L5/S1 intervertebral disc herniation. METHODS Nineteen patients were diagnosed as L5/S1 disc herniation and treated using transiliac approach to endoscopic discectomy (group I), and 20 patients were diagnosed as non-L5/S...

Symptomatic thoracic disc herniation is an uncommon condition and early surgical approaches were associated with significant morbidity and even mortality. We are the first to describe the technique of percutaneous thoracic nucleoplasty in three patients with severe radicular pain due to thoracic disc herniation. Two of the patients experienced more than 75% pain relief and one patient experienc...

There are very few reported cases of regression of large cervical disc herniation without any intervention-the so-called spontaneous regression, demonstrated using MRI. We report a rare and interesting case of MRI that demonstrated near complete regression of a large herniated cervical intervertebral disc, without any surgical treatment.

Intradural disc herniation (IDDH) is a rare complication of intervertebral disc disease and comprises 0.26-0.30% of all herniated discs, with 92% of them located in the lumbar region (1). We present a case of IDDH that presented with intermittent symptoms and signs of cauda equina compression. We were unable to find in the literature, any previously described cases of intermittent cauda equina ...

This study aimed to determine the therapeutic effect of radiofrequency combined with low-dose collagenase injected into the disc interior via an anterior cervical approach for cervical intervertebral disc herniation.Forty-three patients (26-62-year old; male/female ratio: 31/12) with cervical intervertebral disc herniation received radiofrequency combined with 60 to 100 U of collagenase, inject...

We present two cases of disc herniation associated with juvenile intervertebral disc calcification, a rare, self-limiting process which typically resolves with conservative treatment. Recognition of this entity prevents unnecessary diagnostic workup and possible surgical intervention. A review of the literature for this rare entity is discussed.

Thoracolumbar intervertebral disc disease is the most common cause of caudal paresis in dogs. Whilst the pathogenesis of the extrusion has been widely studied, treatment protocols and prognostic factors relating to outcome remain controversial. Recent studies have examined a multitude of factors relating to time to regain ambulation after decompressive surgery. Most intervertebral disc herniati...

BACKGROUND The Spine Patient Outcomes Research Trial (SPORT) is a prospective, multicenter study of operative versus nonoperative treatment of lumbar intervertebral disc herniation. It has been suggested that epidural steroid injections may help improve patient outcomes and lower the rate of crossover to surgical treatment. METHODS One hundred and fifty-four patients included in the intervert...

BACKGROUND Lumbar intervertebral disc herniation and spinal tumor are major pathologies that may cause back pain and radiculopathy. Neurological symptoms resulting from disc herniation and intradural spinal tumor together, however, are very rare. CASE PRESENTATION We report a case of lumbar disc herniation which coexists with intradural schwannoma at the same spinal level in a 67-year-old man...
