PURPOSE Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) have been recently associated with hip fractures. We present a case series of breast cancer survivors and a systematic review of bone health care in breast cancer. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN We completed clinical assessments and bone density testing (BMD) of hip fractures from January 2005 to December 2008. Prefracture and 12-month functional status was obtained. S...

„ Hip fractures are common and increasing with an ageing population. In the United Kingdom, the national guidelines recommend operative intervention within 36 hours of diagnosis. However, long-term anticoagulant treatment is frequently encountered in these patients which can delay surgical intervention. Despite this, there are no set national standards for management of drug-induced coagulopath...

We present a model of fracture formation on surfaces of bilayered materials. The model makes it possible to synthesize patterns of fractures induced by growth or shrinkage of one layer with respect to another. We use the finite element method (FEM) to obtain numerical solutions. This paper improves the standard FEM with techniques needed to efficiently capture growth and fractures.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS The purpose of this study is to test the theory that the paranasal sinuses serve a protective function for the central nervous system and special sensory organs. STUDY DESIGN Nonrandomized experimental trauma study with fresh human cadavers. METHODS Fresh human cadaver heads were obtained and the sinuses on one side underwent endoscopic endonasal sinus surgery and were...

Background: The purpose of this retrospective study was to analyze the long-term results of revision ORIF, jointcontracture release, and autogenous bone-grafting in the treatment of distal humerus frac-ture nonunions in older agedpatients with poor bone quality or bone loss who would have been candidates for total elbow arthroplasty. Methods: Seven patients (average age at inde...

Osteoporotic-associated vertebral compression fractures are a major public health concern, dwarfing even hip fractures in incidence in the United States. These fractures carry a significant morbidity and mortality burden and also represent a major growing source of consumption of scarce heath resources. Percutaneous vertebroplasty remains a commonly used and safe technique for the symptomatic t...

This work summarizes our recent findings on hydraulic fracturing-induced seismicity nucleated in the Duvernay shale reservoirs within Western Canada Sedimentary Basin. A coupled model of in-situ stress and fracture-fault systems was built to quantify four-dimensional pressure changes spatiotemporal nucleation during fracturing. Five triggering mechanisms were successfully recognized seismicity-f...

We report a rare case of multiple steroid-induced vertebral fractures associated with Wegener's granulomatosis. The patient had been administered prednisolone (20 mg/day) for 7 years. He visited us because of severe back pain after a slight fall. Motor weakness was detected below the L1 level. Radiographs and MRI of the spine revealed burst fractures of T56, and compression fractures of T9-10, ...

BACKGROUND Our aim was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of Ilizarov external fixator used for the management of shotgun induced open humeral fractures with special emphasize on neurovascular sequelae. METHODS The authors retrospectively reviewed eleven shotgun induced open humeral fractures managed with emergent application of Ilizarov external fixator. No patient had associated neurovascula...

Shale gas represents a major fraction of the proven reserves of natural gas in the United States and a collection of other countries. Higher gas prices and the need for cleaner fuels provides motivation for commercializing shale gas deposits even though the cost is substantially higher than traditional gas deposits. Recent advances in horizontal drilling and multistage hydraulic fracturing, whi...
