Romiplostim is a thrombopoietin receptor agonist approved for the treatment of thrombocytopenia in patients with chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) who had an insufficient response to corticosteroids, immunoglobulins, or splenectomy. Although thrombotic and embolic complications have been reported in patients receiving romiplostim, these have generally involved coronary artery or...
A 23-year-old female with the diagnosis of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) was admitted to our hospital with severe chest pain. The electrocardiogram (ECG) revealed acute anterior myocardial infarction. She underwent an immediate cardiac catheterization. An occluded left anterior descending (LAD) was detected by coronary angiography. Reperfusion was performed successfully by angioplas...
Prof Şinasi Özsoylu, MD, Department of Pediatrics, Hematology Unit, Faculty of Medicine, Hacettepe University, Ankara 06100 (Turkey) I have read with interest the article by Mazzucconi et al. [1] entitled ‘Danazol Therapy in Refractory Chronic Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura’ in the recent issue of the journal. I would like to bring to the authors’ attention that marked improvement of platelet ...
Kaposi sarcoma (KS) is a multifocal vascular neoplasm most commonly seen in association with human immunodeficiency virus infection. However, KS has also been reported in patients treated with immunosuppressive agents. However, it is very rare to find KS in association with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). Here we describe a 58-year-old male patient suffering from ITP treated with cor...
The use of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) concomitant with platelet transfusion is indicated in patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) in the case of life-threatening severe thrombocytopenia or hemorrhaging, or when therapeutic procedures with some risk of bleeding are performed.1 We describe a 44-year-old man with ITP who underwent a stress test for mixed angina attacks. Ea...
Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is an autoimmune disorder with a low platelet count characterized by premature platelet destruction and suppression of platelet production mediated by autoantibodies, which may predispose to bleeding. Although the prevalence of coronary artery disease (CAD) in ITP seems to be rare, their co-occurrence is not unusual. Patients with ITP have increased ris...
Thirty-seven patients with idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) were treated with a standard Helicobacter pylori eradication regimen irrespective of H. pylori infection. Our results indicate that platelet recovery results from the disappearance of H. pylori itself, and is mediated, in part, through suppression of anti-platelet autoantibody production.
The combination of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) and chronic renal failure (CRF) is uncommon. This report highlights a case of renal transplantation in a patient with ITP. A 35-year-old man with ITP was admitted with uremic symptoms. A renal transplant and splenectomy was simultaneously performed. A prophylactic pneumococcous vaccination was performed and intravenous immunoglobulin ...
