Forewords Computational Fluid Dynamic is becoming a mature discipline in aerospace sciences. It is no longer only an analysis tool but ready to be used in all stages of design as well. The materials here presented review the growth and advances done in the last 10 years for hypersonic flow phenomena in continuum regime. The status of the physical modelling, code development issues such as algor...
Hypersonic rarefied flows near a wedge, disk, plate, and sphere were studied under the conditions of wind-tunnel experiments [1-8] and hypersonic flights. The direct simulation MonteCarlo (DSMC) method [9] is used to study the influence of similarity parameters on aerodynamic coefficients in He, Ar, N2, and CO2. It is found that, for conditions approaching the hypersonic stabilization limit, th...
We have found that sounds containing high-frequency components above the human audible range (20kHz) significantly increase the regional blood flow in the deep-lying brain structure and the power of the alpha frequency range of the spontaneous electroencephalogram (EEG), and positively affect sound perception. We have termed this phenomenon the “hypersonic effect” [1]. To carry out further expe...
A validation study is presented for a numerical code which calculates a two-dimensional steady-state solution for inviscid hypersonic flows in the presence of strong surface blowing. A higher-orde: Godunov-type finite-volume approach is used to discretize the inviscid Euler equations. Interface values of the state quantities are reconstructed nsing a monotone interpolation technique suggested b...
Direct numerical simulation (DNS) has become a powerful tool in studying fundamental phenomena of laminar-turbulent transition of high-speed boundary layers. Previous DNS studies of supersonic and hypersonic boundary layer transition have been limited to perfect-gas flow over flat-plate boundary layers without shock waves. For hypersonic boundary layers over realistic blunt bodies, DNS studies ...
The development of aeronautics and astronautics, from its practical beginning with the Wright brothers’ first airplane on 17 December 1903, has been driven by one primary aim to fly faster, higher and cheaper. There is an exponential increase in both aircraft speed and altitude over the past 100 years, and now the era of the hypersonic flight is approaching [1]. With practical hypersonic airpla...
Experimental and numerical results have shown that two-dimensional surface roughness can stabilize a hypersonic boundary layer dominated by second-mode instability. It is sought to understand how this physical phenomenon extends from an airflow under a perfect gas assumption to that of a real gas. To these ends, a new high-order shock-fitting method that includes thermochemical nonequilibrium a...
Direct simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) of shock interaction in hypersonic low density flow is developed. Three collision molecular models, including hard sphere (HS), variable hard sphere (VHS), and variable soft sphere (VSS), are employed in the DSMC study. The simulations of double-cone and Edney's type IV hypersonic shock interactions in low density flow are performed. Comparisons between DSMC...
We present an improved technique for automated interactive interferometric image data analysis and demonstrate its application to a wide range of flow configurations and conditions. The examples that we present to illustrate the technique range from the comparatively low velocity flow associated with the flight of an archery arrow to the hypersonic flow in a free-piston shock tunnel.
