Congenital hiatal hernia with herniation of stomach into thorax is not uncommon in children but this herniation is usually seen in midline or on left side. However, right sided intrathoracic stomach with its organoaxial torsion secondary to congenital hiatal hernia is a rare occurrence. Barium meal examination is essential for its diagnosis but plain x-ray of the abdomen can arouse the suspicio...

Disorders of the oesophagus present a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge. Complete esophageal obstruction is a rare complication of endoscopic variceal banding, with only 6 cases in the English literature since the introduction of endoscopic variceal banding in 1986. We report a case of complete esophageal obstruction following esophageal banding due to entrapment of part of a sliding hiatal hernia. To our knowledge, our case is one of few with esophageal obstruction...

Barium esophagograms of 89 patients out of 110 with manometrically proven achalasia were reviewed. Only four (4.4%) patients showed association of hiatal hernia, indicative of its rare occurrence. Presence of hiatal hernia, is said to have less likelihood of associated achalasia but this association does exist as per our report and that of others.

INTRODUCTION Large esophageal hiatal hernias occur most commonly in elderly patients with comorbidities, in whom even an elective surgery cannot be performed without high risks. Although fundoplication is recommended for esophageal hiatal hernia repair, we prefer not to limit our options to fundoplication, as obstruction is a frequent main complaint. We favor an anterior gastropexy approach ins...

AIM Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication represents the gold standard in GERD therapy, although, a frequent failure of this primary repair is represented by the breakdown of the hiatoplasty. Aim of our work is to evaluate if ultrastructural alterations of the diaphragmatic pillars in patients with hiatal hernia, can explain the physiopathology of hernia recurrence. MATERIAL OF STUDY The patient...
