Lung disease is very common in patients with hematologic neoplasms and varies in function of the underlying disease and its treatment. Lung involvement is associated with high morbidity and mortality, so it requires early appropriate treatment. Chest computed tomography (CT) and the analysis of biologic specimens are the first line diagnostic tools in these patients, and sometimes invasive meth...
Hydroxamate-based histone deacetylase inhibitors (Hb-HDACIs), such as vorinostat, belinostat and panobinostat, have been previously shown to have a wide range of activity in hematologic malignancies such as cutaneous T-cell lymphoma and multiple myeloma. Recent data show that they synergize with a variety of cytotoxic and molecular targeted agents in many different solid tumors, including breas...
We analyzed five women, who have developed epithelial neoplasms after sex-mismatched stem cell transplants. Using in situ hybridization for sex chromosome-specific DNA probes and immunohistochemistry we identified the origin of the tumor cells. We conclude that none of the non-hematologic malignancies was of donor origin.
VOLUME 18, NUMBER 16 7 BUMC PROCEEDINGS 2005;18:7–12 Currently, molecular diagnostics plays an important role in the clinical management of a wide array of hematologic neoplasms, solid tumors, infectious diseases, and inherited genetic disorders. In this second part of our series, we conclude our review of esoteric techniques by summarizing some of the advances in the field of “proteomics.” We ...
A little-appreciated association between renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and hematologic malignancies (HMs) has been reported for at least 20 years. The HM characteristically occurs first in patients with both neoplasms, and the large majority (94%) of these HMs are of B-cell origin. Furthermore, the majority of patients with RCC and an HM are male. Recently, we have noted an increased incidence of ...
PURPOSE CD52 is a GPI-linked glycoprotein expressed by B cells, T cells, monocytes, and macrophages. The humanized monoclonal antibody alemtuzumab (CAMPATH-1H) is specific for CD52 and is Food and Drug Administration - approved for the treatment of relapsed or refractory chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). The utility of CAMPATH in the treatment of other hematologic neoplasms has been explored;...
The most common and often most severe forms of meningitis are due to infections, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites. Noninfectious causes of meningitis include primary inflammatory syndromes such as vasculitis and connective tissue disease, neoplasms of solid tumor and hematologic forms, and chemical irritants including certain medications, subarachnoid blood, and biologic matter...
