Albumin plays an important role in maintaining physiological homeostasis. Although decreased albumin concentration has been well described as an acute-phase response following injury, it is unclear whether the decrease is due to compromised synthesis of albumin, dilution, or imbalance between synthesis and breakdown rates, particularly after injury. We investigated changes in albumin synthesis ...

The present study determined whether thermal injury increases the expression of the ubiquitin (Ub) E3 ligases referred to as muscle ring finger (MuRF)-1 and muscle atrophy F-box (MAFbx; aka atrogin-1), which are muscle specific and responsible for the increased protein breakdown observed in other catabolic conditions. After 48 h of burn injury (40% total body surface area full-thickness scald b...

The purpose of this study was to determine whether systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) and American Burn Association (ABA) criteria predict sepsis in the burn patient and develop a model representing the best combination of novel clinical sepsis predictors. A retrospective, case-controlled, within-patient comparison of burn patients admitted to a single intensive care unit from Janua...

Thermal injury has been shown to alter gut epithelium and heart myocyte homeostasis by inducing programmed cell death. The effect of thermal injury on hepatocyte apoptosis and proliferation, however, has not been established. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a large thermal injury increases liver cell apoptosis and proliferation and whether these changes were associated with a...

• Tyramino (p-hydroxyphenylethylamine), the product of decarboxylation of tyrosine, has been known for a number of years to have pharmacological activity as a pressor substance." In a preparation of the atrium of the cat's heart in Locke-Ringer solution, Ajidrus, in 1 924, showed that tyramine increased the rate aud amplitude of atrial contractions. In 1926, Tainter reported the circulatory eff...

PURPOSE Severe neck contracture is a problem that must be resolved by priority. We consider the best contracture treatment to be the full-thickness skin graft. However, clinicians often encounter patients, especially extensive burn patients, who have insufficient donor sites for the full-thickness skin graft. We treated extensive burn patients with neck scar contractures with a split-thickness ...
