An apparent plasticity in glucose sensitivity was first noted while studying human taste variants, but the experimental design did not rule out regression to the mean. Since then, a human taste induction hypothesis that sensitivity for a taste stimulus increases with repeated exposure to it has been supported first by experience-induced changes in taste identification of monosodium glutamate an...

beta-Glucosidase of Aspergillus phoenicis QM 329 was immobilized on chitosan, using the bifunctional agent glutaraldehyde. The most active preparation based on the amount of support contained a 1:2.5 enzyme-to-chitosan ratio (wt/wt). However, the specific activity of the bound enzyme decreased from 10 to 1% with increasing enzyme-to-chitosan ratio. Compared with free beta-glucosidase, the immob...

Improved techniques consisting of glutaraldehyde fixation, Giemsa staining, and colony counter enumeration of foci in viral infectivity assays were compared to microscope scanning and lantern slide projection methods. These techniques broadened the scope of application to potentially hazardous viruses and increased the efficiency of assaying.

Glutaraldehyde causes especially high autofluorescence. It reacted with proteins and peptides to generate visible to near-IR emitters. A model indicated that ethylenediamine and a secondary amine in the molecule were key components for the formation of emissive species. The mechanism enables us to control the generation and elimination of autofluorescence.

Immobilization is an exciting alternative to improve the stability of enzymatic processes. However, part of the applied covalent strategies for immobilization uses specific conditions, generally alkaline pH, where some enzymes are not stable. Here, a new generation of heterofunctional supports with application at neutral pH conditions was proposed. New supports were developed with different bif...

Immunization with MFS-180 vaccine prepared in the presence of glutaraldehyde (0.05%), lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (100 micrograms/ml), and concanavalin A (Con A) (200 micrograms/ml) could protect Swiss mice against a subsequent challenge by 1 X 10(6) MFS-180 cells. The sequence of attachment of LPS and Con A to glutaraldehyde-treated cells as found to determine the efficacy of the vaccine. LPS cou...

Inhibition of free movement of C3 receptors by either applying low temperature (3 degrees C) or fixing the cell surfce of lymphocytes with glutaraldehyde (2 times 10(-5) to 2 times 10(-1)%) results in loss of firm attachment of EAC142 3b cells to the lympocytes as demonstrated here by loss of rosette formation of Raji lymphoid cells. Under the same conditions soluble C3 can still bind but is un...

The effects of time, concentration, and pH on glutaraldehyde ( GA) fixation were studied in vitro using 2 model systems: coIlagen-BSA gels as simulations of cell cytoplasm and enzyme activity in treated pulp tissue. The former system demonstrated that GA is most effective when buffered, and that its penetration is self-limiting. In general, concentration proved more a factor in the depth of pen...

The method described depends on fixing additional cytology smear preparations with glutaraldehyde to be used, if needed. Removal of cells from the slide makes use of partially polymerised resins in the usual way but a paper marker is used to localise the area in the resin block which contains the cells to be examined. Slides are placed in a freezing cabinet to facilitate easy separation of the ...

The effectiveness of glutaraldehyde (GTA), a very common biocide for controlling biofilms formed by Pseudomonas fluorescens on stainless steel slides, in laminar and turbulent flow, was investigated. Tests were performed using a concentration of biocide of 200 mg L–1 and a range of exposure times. The GTA action was assessed by means of activity tests and dry weight of the biofilms. The physica...
