Bacterial endosymbionts of ticks are of interest due to their close evolutionary relationships with tick-vectored pathogens. For instance, whereas many ticks contain Francisella-like endosymbionts (FLEs), others transmit the mammalian pathogen Francisella tularensis. We recently sequenced the genome of an FLE present in the hard tick Amblyomma maculatum (FLE-Am) and showed that it likely evolve...

There have been few studies of the psychopathology of patients with frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE). The majority of studies of both inter-ictal and post-ictal psychoses have strongly suggested the influence of temporal lobe disturbance on psychoses. Patients with organic brain damage or schizophrenia, however, sometimes show frontal lobe dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to better underst...

The present study investigates Foreign Language Enjoyment (FLE) and Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety (FLCA) in the classroom. Participants were 1746 current FL learners from around the world. We used a measure of FLE, based on Likert scale ratings of 21 items (Dewaele & MacIntyre, 2014), and a measure of FLCA based on 8 items extracted from the FLCAS (Horwitz, Horwitz, & Cope, 1986). Statisti...

In this paper, we investigate cumulated clauses on a set of attributes consisting of concept descriptions of the description logic FLE . This kind of expression is useful for describing the attribute logic of contexts where the attributes can be seen as FLE concept descriptions. We provide a deduction calculus for this type of expressions and prove its soundness and completeness.

The flash-lag effect (FLE) consists in perceiving a briefly presented stationary stimulus to lag behind an aligned moving stimulus. This study investigates the effects of actively controlling the moving stimulus. By means of a robotic arm, observers continuously moved a dot along a circular trajectory, and a flash was displayed closely at unpredictable times. In two experiments, we found that t...

A comparison study was designed to investigate the characteristics of university students’ inquiry in two conditions involving either computer-supported collaboration or more traditional individual writing assignments. About 80 students participated in a lecture course on the psychology of learning and thinking. Between their weekly lectures a subset of the students worked in small groups withi...

Children with epilepsy have a high rate of mood and behavior problems; yet few studies consider the emotional and behavioral impact of surgery. No study to date has been sufficiently powered to investigate effects of both side (left/right) and site (temporal/frontal) of surgery. One hundred patients (aged 6-16) and their families completed measures of depression, anxiety, and behavioral functio...

OBJECTIVE Loss of consciousness (LOC) in frontal lobe epilepsy (FLE) has been rarely specifically studied until now. In this study we evaluated the LOC in a population of patients with FLE and studied the relationship between changes in synchrony and degree of LOC. METHODS 24 patients undergoing stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) during pre-surgical evaluation of FLE were studied. The LOC in...

Over the last decade, research has examined the endocrine-disrupting action of various environmental pollutants, including hormones, pharmaceuticals, and surfactants, in sewage treatment plant effluent. Responding to the growth of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and the pollutants present in their wastewater (e.g., nutrients, pharmaceuticals, and hormones), the U.S. Environmental...

Among other theories, visible persistence has been suggested to explain the flash-lag effect (FLE). According to this account, the flash is not compared to the moving object at its perceived onset, but at a later time while it is still subjectively visible. Therefore, it is reported to lag the moving object. We show that observers' perceptual set determines whether the persisting image of the f...
