An initial investigation into the performance of acoustic condition monitoring in the detection of structural faults in turbine blades has been carried out. The focus is to design a non-contact condition monitoring method which might allow the detection of incipient faults in the turbine blades therefore preventing major breakdown and potentially reducing maintenance downtime. Such systems, may...

This paper studies the impact of system frequency deviations on the operation of fixed speed induction generators used in wind turbine generation systems (WTGS). It presents an analytic method to predict the angular speed, torque and current during and after a frequency disturbance. The proposed method can be used to evaluate the operation limits of the WTGS during frequency deviations.

Abstract – This paper discusses the development of an adaptive feedback linearisation controller for a variable speed wind turbine. The controller provides an adaptive estimate of the turbine shaft torque. A feedback linearisation controller utilises the torque estimate to provide a torque reference for a field oriented squirrel cage induction machine. The induction machine is connected through...

The application of conventional wind turbines on board a vessel creates a number of new challenges for turbine control systems. Thrust force is used in marine applications as an additional control variable for propulsion of the vessel. Variability of the wind speed and wind direction, together with the yaw rate and range constraints, impose strong requirements on the turbine control system. A n...

Many challenges exist for the efficient and safe operation of wind turbines due to the difficulty in creating accurate models of their dynamic characteristics and the turbulent conditions in which they operate. A promising new area of wind turbine research is the application of adaptive control techniques, which are well suited to problems where the plant model is not well known and the plant o...

In this study, an adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system is designed for output voltage and frequency control of a variable-speed wind power generation system. Variable-speed wind power generation systems (VSWPGS) provide the opportunity to capture more power than fixed speed turbines. On the other hand, the variable-speed wind turbine output can be variable voltage and variable frequency for fl...

Wind is one of the cheapest and widely source of alternative energy. To convert it into electrical energy a wind turbine with generator is used but to properly convert this wind energy into electrical energy proper design of wind turbine is needed. In this paper we presents a genetic algorithm based optimization technique for the estimation of wind turbine parameters on the basis of requirement...

This work proposes a novel control scheme for a variable speed wind turbine system based on the permanent magnet synchronous generator. Regions II and III for a wind speed profile are considered, hence the control is designed for maximizing the generated power from the wind turbine when the wind speed is below the nominal wind speed, and to saturate the generated power when the wind speed is ab...

This paper aims to apply a maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm into a wind turbine with variable speed generator model, jointly the wind energy conversion system (WECS). There are several types of wind turbine in different configurations and their efficiencies in energy extraction are different depending on their aerodynamic designs. In general, their power efficiencies are bounded by...

We have developed a new wind turbine system that consists of a diffuser shroud with a broad-ring brim at the exit periphery and a wind turbine inside it. The shrouded wind turbine with a brimmed diffuser has demonstrated power augmentation by a factor of about 2–5 compared with a bare wind turbine, for a given turbine diameter and wind speed. This is because a low-pressure region, due to a stro...
