In this work we present a method to detect and recognize the signs of the card game of Truco which are a subset of facial gestures. The method uses temporal templates to represent motion and later extract features. The proposed method works in real time, allowing to use it as an human-computer interface , for example, in the context of the card game of Truco . To the best of our knowledge this ...
The natural communication of apes may hold clues about language origins, especially because apes frequently gesture with limbs and hands, a mode of communication thought to have been the starting point of human language evolution. The present study aimed to contrast brachiomanual gestures with orofacial movements and vocalizations in the natural communication of our closest primate relatives, b...
This paper describes the implementation of a fast and accurate gesture recognition system. Image sequences are used to train a standard SVM to recognize Yes, No, and Neutral gestures from different users. We show that our system is able to detect facial gestures with more than 80% accuracy from even small input images.
Infants between 12 and 21 days of age can imitate both facial and manual gestures; this behavior cannot be explained in terms of either conditioning or innate releasing mechanisms. Such imitation implies that human neonates can equate their own unseen behaviors with gestures they see others perform.
This paper introduces an experimental study performed to investigate the usability aspects of elearning interfaces that incorporate the use of avatar as a virtual lecturer. A within-subject experiment has been conducted using three different e-learning interfaces which were developed from scratch and tested by a group of 48 users. Each of these three interfaces involved the use of a human-like ...
Facial expressions, gestures, and body postures can portray emotions in a non-verbal way. These methods are frequently employed by actors in theatrical plays or in movies, or even by virtual characters such as those found in computer games, animated storybooks, and website e-assistants. Signals for emotion expressions (“cues”), such as a raised fist and narrowing of the eyes, substantially infl...
Student engagement is a key element to ensure effective learning process. In this work, we presented an automatic system for monitoring level from students’ facial gestures. way, the tutor can analyse of students and improve teaching method strategies enhance There has been extensive research on automated classification level, but most these methods rely mainly expensive eye trackers or physiol...
Autonomous Speaker Agent is a graphically embodied animated agent (a virtual character) capable of reading plain English text and rendering it in a form of speech, accompanied by the appropriate, natural-looking facial gestures. The system uses lexical analysis and statistical models of facial gestures in order to generate the gestures related to the spoken text. It is intended for the automati...
Keeping track of self-executed facial expressions is essential for the ability to correctly interpret and reciprocate social expressions. However, little is known about neural mechanisms that participate in self-monitoring of facial expression. We designed a natural paradigm for social interactions where a monkey is seated in front of a peer monkey that is concealed by an opaque liquid crystal ...
