The problem of nding the optimal shape of an electromagnet is considered in the context of nite element discretization of the state equation. An expression for the gradient in the nite dimensional setting is derived and compared with the corresponding in nite dimensional gradient. An asymptotic convergence result is proved under suitable smoothness assumptions on the nite element basis.
