Ethylene is known to play an essential role in mediating hypoxic responses in plants. Here, we show that in addition to regulating hypoxic responses, ethylene also regulates cellular responses in the reoxygenation stage after anoxic treatment in Arabidopsis. We found that expression of several ethylene biosynthetic genes and ethylene-responsive factors, including ERF1 and ERF2, was induced duri...
Insertional mutagenesis and gene silencing are efficient tools for the determination of gene function. In contrast to gain- or loss-of-function approaches, RNA interference (RNAi)-induced gene silencing can possibly silence multigene families and homoeologous genes in polyploids. This is of great importance for functional studies in hexaploid wheat (Triticum aestivum), where most of the genes a...

Ethylene regulates many aspects of plant growth and development. In the presence of ethylene, the C terminus of EIN2 (EIN2C) translocates into the nucleus and activates transcription. Li et al. and Merchante et al. show that EIN2C also regulates translation through an interaction with the 3' UTRs of transcripts.
Ethylene regulates several aspects of plant development, such as fruit ripening. In this issue of Genes & Development, Qiao and colleagues (pp. 512-521) report that the stability of the ethylene signaling protein EIN2 is modulated by two F-box proteins ETP1/2, reminiscent of the finding that another regulator of ethylene response, EIN3, is also targeted by the F-box proteins EBF1/2. ETP1/2 and ...
Plant responses to ethylene are mediated by regulation of EBF1/2-dependent degradation of the ETHYLENE INSENSITIVE3 (EIN3) transcription factor. Here, we report that the level of EIL1 protein is upregulated by ethylene through an EBF1/2-dependent pathway. Genetic analysis revealed that EIL1 and EIN3 cooperatively but differentially regulate a wide array of ethylene responses, with EIL1 mainly i...
We have adopted a hypoxic treatment system in which only roots were under hypoxic conditions. Through analyzing global transcriptional changes in both shoots and roots, we found that systemic signals may be transduced from roots to trigger responses in tissues not directly subjected to hypoxia. The molecular mechanisms of such systemic responses under flooding are currently largely unknown. Usi...
