Statistical process control, a recognized technique for improving quality and productivity, has been widely employed throughout various industries. The conventional Shewhart control charts are applicable only when the collected sample data are real-valued data. For the purpose of controlling uncertain information when interval-valued data inevitably appear in the manufacturing or service proces...

The eikonal equations in spaces of different dimensions and different types have many applications in the geometric optics, acoustics of inhomogeneous media, theoretical physics, etc. The details on this theme can be found in [1–7] (see also the references therein). Sheng, Guha and Gonzalez (see [8,9] and the references therein) proposed new effective methods for solving many problems of comput...

We give a parametrization of the possible Serre invariants (N, k, ν) of modular mod ℓ Galois representations of the exceptional types A 4 , S 4 , A 5 , in terms of local data attached to the fields cut out by the associated projective representations. We show how this result combined with certain global considerations leads to an effective procedure that will determine for a given eigenform f a...

Identification of positive definiteness of functions is crucial in control theory. However for generalized homogeneous functions, there does not exist an effective method to identify the positive definiteness. In this paper, we consider Lipschitz continuous generalized homogeneous functions. For the functions, we propose a new method to identify the positive definiteness of the functions. Moreo...

Kimberlites identification is a very important task for diamond mining. In traditional way, geologists draw upon past experience to do this work. Whether the bedrock should be drilled depends on their analysis of rock samples. This method has two disadvantages. First, as the database increasing, it becomes more difficult to do this work by manual inspection. Secondly, the accuracy is influenced...

The cognitive skills required for successful academic performance includes self-regulatory functioning, an ability to enact conscious control over thoughts, feelings, and actions. The current studies examined the effects of brief periods of meditation on the academic performance of students at California State University, Northridge. Participants from four different psychology classes (three lo...

The goal of this study was to determine if laptop use in lecture negatively impacts learning outcomes of surrounding students taking notes on paper. Two sections of a large introductory biology course (>400 students/section) were zoned into a laptop-permitted and a laptop-free area. Two sections in which laptop users could sit anywhere served as the Control. There was no difference in the atten...

ISA and cardinality constraints are among the most interesting types of constraints in data models. ISA constraints are used to establish several forms of containment among classes, and are receiving great attention in moving to object-oriented data models, where classes are organized in hierarchies based on a generalization/specialization principle. Cardinality constraints impose restrictions ...

We present an intuitive and effective method for inducing style scores on words and phrases. We exploit signal in a phrase’s rate of occurrence across stylistically contrasting corpora, making our method simple to implement and efficient to scale. We show strong results both intrinsically, by correlation with human judgements, and extrinsically, in applications to genre analysis and paraphrasing.

The professional Electronic Leadership Portfolio (ELP) is an effective method for the promotion of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the educational arena, both as a model for aspiring leaders and as a model for the necessary development of skills in teachers. Furthermore, the ELP provides a framework for future measurement of leadership skills and development as well as providi...
