This work characterizes the compressibility dynamics in turbulent fast flames for a range of flame speeds. These experience increased effects through formation strong shocks and may develop runaway acceleration combined with pressure buildup that leads to turbulence induced deflagration-to-detonation transition (tDDT). Simultaneous high-speed particle image velocimetry, OH* chemiluminescence, s...

1.1 Introduction Recent numerical simulations of Type Ia Supernova (SN Ia) explosions [1, 2] have successfully modeled the Chandrasekhar-mass deflagration scenario (for a review see [3] or J. Niemeyer's contribution to these proceedings) in three spatial dimensions. In this SN Ia model a car-bon/oxygen white dwarf (WD) star accretes matter from a binary companion until it reaches the Chandrasek...

A theoretical two-phase-flow analysis is developed to describe the quasi-steady propagation, across a pressure jump, of a multi-phase deflagration in confined porous energetic materials. The difference, or overpressure, between the upstream (unburned) and downstream (burned) gas pressure leads to a more complex structure than that which is obtained for an unconfined deflagration in which the pr...

It is shown that a conversion of neurons into strange quark matter in neutron stars is possible by means of a combustion process with a well-defined front. Conditions for the realization of a specific combustion mode, whether deflagration, detonation, or fast combustion, are discussed for several forms of the equations of state of neutron and strange matters.

Advances in experimental, high-speed techniques can be used to explore the processes occurring within energetic materials. This review describes techniques used to study a wide range of processes: hot-spot formation, ignition thresholds, deflagration, sensitivity and finally the detonation process. As this is a wide field the focus will be on small-scale experiments and quantitative studies. It...
