The goal of this short course is to review the analysis and the systematic discretization of saddlepoint systems that arise in the weak formulation of certain fluid flow problems by Galekrin methods. To demonstrate the applicability of the main arguments in various situations, we consider the slow flow of water through a channel surrounded by a porous aquiver. While the free flow of the fluid m...

This article presents a numerical study of the doublediffusive mixed convection in a vertical channel filled with porous medium by using non-equilibrium model. The flow is assumed fully developed, uni-directional and steady state. The controlling parameters are thermal Rayleigh number (RaT ), Darcy number (Da), Forchheimer number (F), buoyancy ratio (N), inter phase heat transfer coefficient (H...

The acid treatment of carbonate reservoirs is a widely practiced oil and gas well stimulation technique. The injected acid dissolves the material near the wellbore and creates flow channels that establish a good connectivity between the reservoir and the well. Such flow channels are called wormholes. Different from the traditional simulation technology relying on Darcy framework, the new Darcy-...

Looped water distribution systems are conventionally analyzed by using iterative numerical methods. The aim of the applied numerical methods is to solve the system of non-linear equations which express the energy and mass balance at the nodes. Instead of the widely used numerical solution of these non-linear equations, this paper introduces two heuristic optimization-based models for the hydrau...

A solid tumor is investigated as porous media for fluid flow simulation. Most of the studies use Darcy model for porous media. In Darcy model, the fluid friction is neglected and a few simplified assumptions are implemented. In this study, the effect of these assumptions is studied by considering Brinkman model. A multiscale mathematical method which calculates fluid flow to a solid tumor is us...

The coupled Stokes and Darcy equations are approximated by a strongly conservative finite element method. The discrete spaces are the divergence-conforming velocity space with matching pressure space such as the Raviart-Thomas spaces. This work proves optimal error estimate of the velocity in the L2 norm in the domain and on the interface under weak regularity assumptions.

We consider a differential system based on the coupling of the Navier-Stokes and Darcy equations for modeling the interaction between surface and porousmedia flows. We formulate the problem as an interface equation, we analyze the associated (nonlinear) Steklov-Poincaré operators, and we prove its wellposedness. We propose and analyze iterative methods to solve a conforming finite element appro...

The forced convection heat transfer in high porosity metal-foam filled tube heat exchangers are studied in this paper. The Brinkman Darcy momentum model and two energy equations for both solid and fluid phases in porous media are employed .The study shows that using metal-foams can significantly improve the heat transfer in heat exchangers. Keywords—metal foam, Nusselt number, heat exchanger, h...

This paper presents and compares several numerical solutions of the coupled system of Navier-Stokes and Darcy equations. The schemes are based on combinations of the finite element method and the discontinuous Galerkin method. Accuracy and robustness of the methods are investigated for heterogeneous porous media. The importance of local mass conservation for filtration problems is also discussed.
