In many applications, classification systems often require human intervention in the loop. In such cases the decision process must be transparent and comprehensible, simultaneously requiring minimal assumptions on the underlying data distributions. To tackle this problem, we formulate an axis-aligned subspace-finding task under the assumption that query specific information dictates the complem...

The entropy of an ergodic finite-alphabet process can be computed from a single typical sample path x1 using the entropy of the k-block empirical probability and letting k grow with n roughly like logn. We further assume that the distribution of the process is a g-measure. We prove large deviation principles for conditional, non-conditional and relative k(n)-block empirical entropies.

In the context of evidence evaluation, where the probability of evidence given a certain hypothesis is considered, different pieces of evidence are often combined in a naive way by assuming conditional independence. In this paper we present a number of results that can be used to assess both the importance of a reliable likelihood-ratio estimate and the impact of neglecting dependencies among p...

In a natural experiment, this paper studies the impact of an informal sanctioning mechanism on individuals’ voluntary contribution to a public good. Cross-country skiers’ actual cash contributions in two ski resorts, one with and one without an informal sanctioning system, are used. I find the contributing share to be higher in the informal sanctioning system (79 percent) than in the non-sancti...

Evaluating IS/IT projects and deciding on their continuation has been hampered by the problem of equivocality. Equivocal situations hinder decision-makers to clearly recognise potential problems and implications of these decisions, as well as to decide the course of action in a purposeful fashion. However, little attention has been devoted to examine the causes of such situations. Extant litera...

This paper focus on the problems faced in the empirical investigation of the relation between the level and volatility of inflation. Monthly inflation series seem to be affected by both the presence of outliers and conditional heteroscedasticity. First, the paper illustrates the implications that the presence of outliers and conditional heteroscedasticity have on the usual residual diagnostics....

Unobserved component models with GARCH disturbances are extended to allow for asymmetric responses of conditional variances to positive and negative shocks. The asymmetric conditional variance is represented by a member of the QARCH class of models. The proposed model allows to distinguish whether the possibly asymmetric conditional heteroscedasticity affects the short-run or the long-run distu...

In this paper we investigate the notion of conditional independence and prove several information inequalities for conditionally independent random variables. Keywords— Conditionally independent random variables, common information, rate region.

We show that two essentially conditional linear information inequalities (including the Zhang–Yeung’97 conditional inequality) do not hold for asymptotically entropic points. This result raises the question of the “physical” meaning of these inequalities and the validity of their use in practice-oriented applications.
