Epifluorescence microscopy studies of mixtures of phospholipids and cholesterol at the air-water interface often exhibit coexisting liquid phases. The properties of these liquids point to the formation of "condensed complexes" between cholesterol and certain phospholipids, such as sphingomyelin. It is found that monolayers that form complexes can incorporate a low concentration of a ganglioside...

We report the negative ion photoelectron spectra of (NH3)n541– 1100 2 , recorded using 2.540 eV photons. The largest cluster anion in this series has a diameter of approximately 4.3 nm. The vertical detachment energies ~VDEs! of these cluster anions increase smoothly from 0.55 eV for n541 to 1.05 eV for n51100. The VDEs throughout this size range are linear with n and extrapolate to a VDE (n5`)...

We study the condensation phenomenon in a zero-range process on scale-free networks. We show that the stationary state property depends only on the degree distribution of underlying networks. The model displays a stationary state phase transition between a condensed phase and an uncondensed phase, and the phase diagram is obtained analytically. As for the dynamical property, we find that the re...

We report differential cross sections (DCSs) and integral cross sections (ICSs) for electron-impact vibrational-excitation of pyrimidine, at incident electron energies in the range 15-50 eV. The scattered electron angular range for the DCS measurements was 15°-90°. The measurements at the DCS-level are the first to be reported for vibrational-excitation in pyrimidine via electron impact, while ...

Pulmonary surfactant maintains a putative surface-active film at the air-alveolar fluid interface and prevents lung collapse at low volumes. Porcine lung surfactant extracts (LSE) were studied in spread and adsorbed films at 23 +/- 1 degrees C using epifluorescence microscopy combined with surface balance techniques. By incorporating small amounts of fluorescent probe 1-palmitoyl-2-nitrobenzoxa...

The SMx continuum models are designed to include condensed-phase effects in classical and quantum mechanical electronic structure calculations and can also be used for calculating geometries and vibrational frequencies in condensed phases. Originally developed for homogeneous liquid solutions, the SMx models have seen substantial application to more complicated condensed phases as well, e.g., t...

The minimum surface tension and respreadability of a surfactant monolayer is limited by a two to three dimensional instability called collapse. Liquid-condensed or solid phase monolayers collapse via fracture followed by loss of material. Liquid-expanded phase monolayers collapse by solubilization into the subphase. Monolayers that retain a continuous liquid-expanded phase network surrounding i...

The electric/color neutral solution and the critical conditions for gapless formation are investigated in the K condensed color-flavor locked matter. We point out that there exist no longer gapless modes for down-strange quark pairing while the gapless phenomenon for up-strange one is dominated in the K condensed environment. In a model-independent way, the phase transition to the resulting gap...

We address the dynamics of electronicÈvibrational excited states in isolated molecules, clusters, condensed phase and biosystems, which pertain to the phenomena of energy acquisition, storage and disposal as explored from the microscopic point of view. The advent of femtosecond dynamics opened up new horizons in the exploration of chemical and biophysical processes on the timescale of nuclear m...

Induction of DNA synthesis in embryonic chick red cells has been examined during the first and second cell cycles after fusion with HeLa cells synchronized in different parts of G1 and S-phase. The data indicate that: (i) the younger the embryonic blood the more rapidly the red cells are induced into DNA synthesis; (ii) the greater the ratio of HeLa to chick nuclei in the heterokaryon, the more...
