Bipolar disorder is a common psychiatric condition characterized by periods of depression alternating with mania, affecting an estimated 1% of the population worldwide and 3% in the United States (Kessler et al. 2005). One of the mainstays of treatment for this disease is lithium, which is efficacious but has numerous side effects. Among these adverse effects is renal toxicity, including diabet...

We investigate the behaviour of global and local Rademacher averages. We present new error bounds which are based on the local averages and indicate how data-dependent local averages can be estimated without a priori knowledge of the class at hand.

CONTEXT The advent of molecular tools capable of subclassifying eosinophilia has changed the diagnostic and clinical approach to what was classically called hypereosinophilic syndrome. OBJECTIVES To review the etiologies of eosinophilia and to describe the current diagnostic approach to this abnormality. DATA SOURCES Literature review. CONCLUSION Eosinophilia is a common, hematologic abno...

Falls are a major cause of morbidity and mortality among older adults and are an independent predictor variable leading to nursing home admission [1]. Each year, 20 percent of people older than 65 sustain serious falls [2]. Accidental death among the elderly is most often caused by falls [3]. The effects of falls, however, are not limited to physical injury; psychological and social sequelae ha...

We propose new bounds on the error of learning algorithms in terms of a data-dependent notion of complexity. The estimates we establish give optimal rates and are based on a local and empirical version of Rademacher averages, in the sense that the Rademacher averages are computed from the data, on a subset of functions with small empirical error. We present some applications to classification, ...

In this extended abstract, we review our recent work “Nominal Schemas in Description Logics: Complexities Clarified” [6], to be presented at KR 2014. The fruitful integration of reasoning on both schema and instance level poses a continued challenge to knowledge representation and reasoning. While description logics (DLs) excel at the former task, rule-based formalisms are often more adequate f...
