This work focuses on the nonlinear control of instabilities in the combustion of a diluted dimethyl ether (DME) / air mixture under low temperature conditions. A nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) is utilized to stabilize the combustion in simulation with the aim to specify minimum actuation dynamic requirements and develop control strategies for an existing experimental chemical reactor.

Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) is a novel combustion strategy for IC engines that exhibits dramatic decreases in fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. Originally conceived in 1979, the HCCI methodology has been revisited several times by industry but has yet to be implemented because the process is difficult to control. To help address these control challenges, the authors her...

Yoshihiro Sukegawa Kazuhiro Oryoji Eiji Ishii, Dr. Eng. OVERVIEW: Improving the fuel economy and emissions of vehicle engines requires a detailed understanding of the various physical processes taking place inside the engine so as to identify optimal combustion control techniques and engine component designs. Based on numerical techniques established by its power plant business for the analysis...

The Internal Combustion (IC) Engine is perhaps the most wide-spread apparatus for transforming liquid and gaseous fuel to useful mechanical work. Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) is a new combustion technology that may develop as an alternative to diesel engines with high efficiency and low NOx and particulate matter emissions. The homogenous charge compression ignition (HCCI) is ...

During the last decade extensive research has been made at Lund University, Sweden, on a lean premix (prevaporize) combustion concept with burnt gas recirculation and a metallic flame holder. From this concept a new lean premixed natural gas combustion chamber with internal combustion gas recirculation (CGR) has been developed for the V160/SOLO 161 Stirling engines. This combustor has ultra-low...

An experimental investigation on waste combustion characteristics of a mass burn incinerator is conducted in this study. Three different charging modes, including operator manipulation, periodic feeding, and temperature control, are taken into consideration. The results indicate that the burning characteristics in the combustion chambers are closely related to the operating modes. For the opera...

Oxy-fuel combustion is one of the energy utilization technologies for CO2 capture which is ready for commercial demonstration. System steady-state simulation is an effective tool to help us understand the thermodynamic properties and adjust operation conditions of oxy-fuel combustion system. Moreover, dynamic simulation is essential for understanding the dynamic characteristics of the system, w...

High-bandwidth fuel modulation is currently one of the most promising methods for active combustion control. To attenuate the large pressure oscillations in the combustion chamber, the fuel is pulsed so that the heat release rate fluctuations damp the pressure oscillations in the combustor. This thesis focuses on the development and implementation of a high-bandwidth, proportional modulation sy...

Wood is often combusted in small scale units for domestic heating. Although the total particle emission levels in Germany have declined steadily over the years, small scale wood combustion is an increasing source of indoor and outdoor air pollution. A novel space charge electrostatic precipitator (ESP) was developed for control of fine particle emissions control from wood combustion stoves and ...

In development of Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI) engines, simultaneous control of combustion phasing and power output has been a major challenge. In this study, a new strategy is developed to control the engine power output and combustion phasing at any desired operating condition. A single zone thermodynamic model coupled to a full kinetic mechanism of Primary Reference Fuels (...
