Choline and folate are interrelated in 1-carbon metabolism, mostly because of their shared function as methyl donors for homocysteine remethylation. Folate deficiency and mutations of methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) reduce the availability of a major methyl donor, 5-methyltetrahydrofolate, which in turn may lead to compensatory changes in choline metabolism. This study investigated ...

Continuous free-flow electrophoretic separation has been used to obtain relatively pure preparations of synaptosomes and synaptic vesicles from crude fractions of guinea pig brain homogenates. Measurements of the contents of protein, neuraminic acid, and bound acetylcholine; the activities of succinic dehydrogenase, adenosine triphosphatase, choline acetylase, and 5'-nucleotidase; and the uptak...

In a 42-d experiment, 576 one-day-old Vencobb 308 broiler chicks were used to investigate the effects of lecithin extract (0.5 g/kg), choline chloride 60% (1 g/kg) and Bio choline (1 g/kg) in diets of moderate and high energy in a 4 × 2 factorial arrangement on performance and certain physiological traits in broiler chickens. The inclusion of Bio choline and lecithin extract in the diet signifi...

Rat liver was fractionated essentially as described by Hogeboom, Schneider, and Pallade (2). The liver was homogenized in 0.88 M sucrose (1 gm. of liver to 10 ml.) in the cold and centrifuged in 25 ml. Lustroid tubes in a 32” angle centrifuge (Custom Scientific Instruments, Inc.) in a cold room kept at 5”. The homogenate was separated into nuclear, mitochondrial, and supernatant fractions. The ...

Real-time monitoring of betaine aldehyde metabolism at high temporal resolution was accomplished using a hyperpolarized choline analog and (13)C-NMR. This represents the first observation of an aldehyde intermediate on hyperpolarized MR and opens the way for kinetic studies of oxidase/dehydrogenase enzymes in vitro and in vivo.

D-Arginine dehydrogenase (DADH) catalyzes the oxidation of D-arginine to imino arginine using FAD as the cofactor. The enzyme is part of a recently discovered two-enzyme complex from Pseudomonas aeruginosa involved in arginine utilization. Function of the enzyme within the organism is unknown. Work on this enzyme has been undertaken to understand the structure as well as its reaction mechanism ...

Choline and glycine are inter-related through their roles in methyl metabolism. Choline is metabolized to betaine, which donates a methyl group to homocysteine to form methionine, also generating dimethylglycine, which is further metabolized to glycine. Choline is transported across the placenta and is higher in fetal than maternal plasma. Placental glycine transfer, however, is limited and poo...
