Pin the amine on the gamma: A new method has been developed for the γ-addition of nitrogen nucleophiles to γ-substituted alkynoates or allenoates through intra- and intermolecular processes that are catalyzed by spirophosphine 1. An asymmetric version of this reaction affords enantioenriched pyrrolidines, indolines, and γ-amino-α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds.

A highly active organocatalyst for alcohol oxidation has been developed. 9-Azanoradamantane N-oxyl (Nor-AZADO 4), constituting an unhindered, stable nitroxyl radical, exhibits superior catalytic activity to 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) and AZADOs in the oxidation of alcohols to their corresponding carbonyl compounds.

Treatment of (η(1)-mesityl)(2)Fe(κ(2)-TMEDA) (1') with an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compound results in 1,4-addition of the mesityl group to give an iron enolate quantitatively. The Z-configuration of the enolate suggested the six-centered mechanism for the conjugate addition.
