 The crystal structure of two B-type carbonated apatite samples was re-analyzed, using the data of Wilson et al (2006). By applying the least squares method for the determination of carbon and oxygen atoms, a slightly different result was obtained, suggesting that the carbonate ion is not rigorously planar. Carbonated ultramafic rocks (i.e., ophicarbonates) form by peridotite serpentinization and carbonation at the seafloor. Their metamorphic evolution is linked to that of serpentinites, hence dating deformation metamorphism in ophicarbonates will add constraints P-T-t history subducted lithosphere. A potential, yet underexplored, suitable mineral for geochronology perovskite (CaTiO3). We present ...

A double-blind comparison of carbonated bupivacaine and bupivacaine hydrochloride in extradural anaesthesia was performed in 40 patients. No significant differences in the onset times, sensory blockade, motor blockade and duration of anaesthesia were demonstrated. Carbonated bupivacaine does not appear to offer any advantage over the hydrochloride salt for extradural anaesthesia.

Naturally occurring carbonated mineral waters have been known for a long time. These effervescent waters exist as a consequence of excess carbon dioxide in an aquifer dissolving under pressure. Although claims for the medicinal properties of these mineral waters have been grossly exaggerated, the presence of carbon dioxide does make aerated waters and soft drinks both more palatable and visuall...

Troodos is a classical ophiolite complex. It is proposed that the serpentinized harzburgites that now form the top of the mountain and represent the originally lowest part of the ophiolite sequence rose as a diapir. This diapiric rise is caused by the pervasive serpentinization of a suboceanic harzburgite, due to rock-sea water interaction. The serpentinization caused a 44% expansion of the roc...

The oral sensation elicited by carbonated water is reduced by capsaicin and by blockers of carbonic anhydrase. We have investigated the temporal profile of this sensation and its cross-desensitization by capsaicin. We additionally tested if the sensation is influenced by amiloride. Following pretreatment of half of the dorsal tongue with 33 p.p.m. capsaicin, carbonated water was flowed over the...

OBJECTIVE To determine the possible association between carbonated beverage consumption and bone fractures among teenaged girls given the awareness of the concern about the impact of carbonated beverage consumption on children's health. SETTING An urban high school. METHODS A cross-sectional (retrospective) study. Four hundred sixty 9th- and 10th-grade girls attending the high school partic...
