Fluconazole disk-diffusion susceptibility was evaluated in 230 blood isolates and 344 non-blood clinical isolates of Candida spp. collected in 2002 at National Taiwan University Hospital. Up to 93.5% of blood isolates were susceptible to fluconazole, 3% were susceptible dose-dependent, and 3.5% were resistant. The minimum inhibitory concentrations at which 50% of tested isolates were inhibited ...

Results From a total of 887 isolates, Candida albicans remains a major pathogen accounted for 50.3%, followed by C. tropicalis(27.4%), C. parapsilosis (12.5%), C.guilliermondii (6%), C. glabrata (1.8%), C. krusei (0.23%), C. rugosa (0.23%), and unidentified species(1.6%). From a total of 103 C. albicans, amphotericin B MIC ranged from 0.016-1ug/ml whereas fluconazole MIC ranged were between 0.0...

In this study, we investigate the susceptibility of Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, Candida krusei, Candida parapsilosis, Candida tropicalis, and Aspergillus fumigatus using the EUCAST microdilution minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) method (final tea supernatant concentration range 5.0-0.005 mg/ml) to 23 different teas and tea catechins including epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) isolate...

curs in immunocompromised conditions such as AIDS, organ transplantation, hematologic malignancy, and diabetes (1). Among the joints affected by Candida, the knee is the most commonly involved joint and few other joints (elbows and hips) have been reported (2). To our knowledge, there was only one report of Candida parapsilosis arthritis involving the ankle, but it had radiographic findings onl...

We measured time-kills and postantifungal effects (PAFEs) of caspofungin against Candida albicans, C. parapsilosis, and C. glabrata isolates. One-hour exposure to caspofungin during PAFE experiments accounted for the majority of killing during time-kill experiments. Regrowth of all isolates was inhibited for at least 24 h following drug washout.

OBJECTIVES Novel highly functionalized bis cyclohexenone ethyl carboxylates 7-12 were designed, synthesized and their structures were elucidated by their elemental analysis, MS, FT-IR, one-dimensional 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopic data. MATERIALS AND METHODS All the synthesized compounds 7-12 were tested for their in vitro antifungal activities against Candida sp. namely Candida albicans, Can...

A 13-month prospective multicenter study including 44 hospitals was carried out to evaluate the epidemiology of Candida parapsilosis complex candidemia in Spain. Susceptibility to amphotericin B, flucytosine, fluconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole, posaconazole, anidulafungin, caspofungin, and micafungin was tested by the microdilution colorimetric method. A total of 364 C. parapsilosis comple...

The in vitro activity of caspofungin (CAS) was investigated against 28 yeast isolates belonging to Candida albicans (n = 5), Candida guilliermondii (n = 10), and Candida parapsilosis (n = 13). CAS MICs obtained by broth dilution and Etest methods clearly showed a rank order of susceptibility to the echinocandin compound with C. albicans > C. parapsilosis > C. guilliermondii. Similarly, time-kil...

The in vitro activities of caspofungin and micafungin against 1,038 yeast isolates have been determined. The caspofungin and micafungin MICs were lower for Candida albicans, Candida glabrata, and Candida tropicalis than for Candida parapsilosis, Candida guilliermondii, and Candida krusei. A clear correlation was seen between the MICs for the two drugs.

The development of the echinocandin class of antifungals represents an important advance in the treatment of candidemia and other forms of invasive candidiasis. The echinocandins demonstrate very good efficacy, a favorable safety profile, and very few drug interactions. They have significant fungicidal activity against all Candida species. They are emerging as the treatment of choice for candid...
