In sediments that contain iron monosulfide, cadmium, nickel, lead, zinc, and silver(I) form insoluble metal sulfides that lower the metal ion activity in the sediment-pore water system, thereby reducing toxicity. However, metal sulfides are susceptible to oxidation by molecular oxygen resulting in metal solubilization. To better understand the sources and sinks of metal sulfides in sediments, i...

In this paper we investigate the receipt of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles in the microemulsion system stabilized by nonionic surfactants, and the effect of the volume of microemulsion droplets and supersaturation on the size of the particles formed CdS. The photoluminescence spectrum microemulsion system containing nanoparticles of CdS, is shifted to shorter wavelengths of the spectrum and the ...

We report for the first time the enzymatic etching of cadmium sulfide nanoparticles (CdS NPs). The fluorescence of semiconductor CdS NPs is modulated irreversibly by an enzymatic reaction catalyzed by horseradish peroxidase (HRP). We observed blue-shifts of the corresponding fluorescence peaks for CdS NPs and a decrease in the intensity of the fluorescence signal.

The mechanisms of metal resistance of a cadmium-resistant Alcaligenes sp. were studied. Growth in a defined medium was unaffected by cadmium at concentrations up to 0.1 mM, while at concentrations up to 2.5 mM, growth occurred after an extended lag phase. The increase in length of the lag phase was abolished by repeated subculturing at these higher concentrations. However, subculture in the abs...

Recently, we reported the production of Cadmium sulfide (CdS) fluorescent semiconductor nanoparticles (quantum dots, QDs) by acidophilic bacteria of the Acidithiobacillus genus. Here, we report that the addition of inorganic phosphate to Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans ATCC 19703 cultures favors the biosynthesis of CdS QDs at acidic conditions (pH 3.5). The effect of pH, phosphate and cadmium con...

Metal sulfide dielectric thin films have been deposited using dynamic wet chemistry processing on silver coated hollow glass waveguides (HGWs). The sulfides used were cadmium sulfide (CdS) and lead sulfide (PbS); both films have excellent infrared transparency and high refractive index contrast. The thickness of these thin films can be tailored to minimize the attenuation of the HGW over specif...

Heavy metal resistance by bacteria is a topic of much importance to the bioremediation of contaminated soils and sediments. We report here the isolation of a highly cadmium-resistant Klebsiella planticola strain, Cd-1, from reducing salt marsh sediments. The strain grows in up to 15 mM CdCl(2) under a wide range of NaCl concentrations and at acidic or neutral pH. In growth medium amended with t...

We perform in this paper a kinetic study of the photoelectrochemical responses of nanoporous thin photoactive films. The films were fabricated by by a layer-by-layer assembly of positively charged polyelectrolytes (poly-l-Lysine, pLys) and negatively charged semiconductor nanoparticles (NPs) on a carboxylic acid terminated alkanethiol-modified gold electrode. Two types of NPs were used to build...
