Genetic mating systems are expected to vary among and within populations in response to environmental and demographic factors. Despite the fact that mating system variation theoretically can have profound effects on important evolutionary processes such as sexual selection, extensive intraspecific surveys of geographical variation in mating systems are rare. We used microsatellite markers to ch...

Understanding how selection acts on traits individually and in combination is an important step in deciphering the mechanisms driving evolutionary change, but for most species, and especially those in which sexual selection acts more strongly on females than on males, we have no estimates of selection coefficients pertaining to the multivariate sexually selected phenotype. Here, we use a labora...

Due to the phenomenon of male pregnancy, the fish family Syngnathidae (seahorses and pipefishes) has historically been considered an archetypal example of a group in which sexual selection should act more strongly on females than on males. However, more recent work has called into question the idea that all species with male pregnancy are sex-role reversed with respect to the intensity of sexua...

Abstract Wood mouse Apodemus sylvaticus and striped field A. agrarius are the most abundant species in Central Europe coexisting several habitats not only such as forests but also rural urban areas. Their basic colours similar, has a pronounced black stripe on its back. The biological function of this phenotypic difference is unexplored; therefore, our goal was to study impact fur pattern well ...

The transfer of immunity from mother to offspring is widespread in animals. The father's contribution to this is usually negligible. However, in a sex-role reversed pipefish where fathers do the mothering, fathers make an important immune priming contribution, too.

We construct inhomogeneous asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole solutions corresponding to the spontaneous breaking of translational invariance and the formation of striped order in the boundary field theory. We find that the system undergoes a second-order phase transition in both the fixed density and fixed chemical potential ensembles, for sufficiently large values of the axion coupling....

White-throated sparrows (Zonotrichia albicollis) exhibit a genetic polymorphism that affects plumage and behavior in both sexes. White-striped morphs are more territorially aggressive, whereas tan-striped morphs provision nestlings at a higher rate. We investigated testosterone physiology in this species in an effort to understand hormonal mechanisms for the observed differences in aggression a...

We study spin and charge striped states at the half-filled high Landau level in the zero Zeeman energy limit using a HartreeFock approximation. It is shown that a ferromagnetic striped Hall state is more stable than the antiferromagnetic striped state or charge striped state. We calculate the collective excitations using the single mode approximation.
