New laws resulting from enactment of the United Nations Stockholm Convention in May 2004 together with the new REACH legislation, have led to significant new activity in the assessment of Persistent, Bioaccumulative, Toxic substances (PBT). Bioconcentration is the process of accumulation of chemicals by organisms through non-dietary routes. The tendency of a substance to bioconcentrate in aquat...

metal pollution has become one of the most serious environmental problems resulting from human activity. phytoremediation utilizes plants to uptake contaminants and can potentially be used to remediate metal-contaminated sites. the present study investigates heavy metal uptake (cd, cr, and ni) from soil by different organs of populus alba and morus alba. for this purpose, cd (40, 80, and 160 m...

We report experimental evidence for bioconcentration of a low-pathogenicity avian influenza virus (H6N8) in the tissue of freshwater clams. Our results support the concept that freshwater clams may provide an effective tool for use in the early detection of influenza A viruses in aquatic environments.

Background: Artemia urmiana are small crustaceans that because of its non-selective filter feeder pattern potentially may absorb high level of heavy metals through their living environment. In this study, the effects of different levels of cadmium and copper on survival, catalase activity and metals bioconcentration rates in A. urmiana nauplii have been investigated. Methods: The research wa...

brassica chinensis l. is a popular vegetable, especially in asian dishes. for plant growing withinorganic fertilizer, cadmium (cd) has been one of the highest metal and health-risk factors included. thisresearch aimed to assess the bioaccumulation of cd by the plant and its genetic changes. the plant was grownin the soil supplemented by cd at 0, 15, 30, 60 and 120 mg/kg. the accumulations in th...

Simple bioaccumulation models predict a monotonic increase in concentration with time until an equilibrium concentration is reached. However, unconsidered dynamics including deterministic oscillations occur if realistic time lags are incorporated. Stability criteria are provided for difference and differential forms of the simplest model. These criteria provide the means of identifying systems ...
