Experimental aspergillosis was induced in 1-day-old turkeys by intra-air-sac inoculation of a spore suspension of a 3-day-old Aspergillus fumigatus culture (CBS 144.89) containing 10(7) spores. Ten additional poults were used as controls. Infected and non-infected animals were closely observed at least twice a day for the appearance of clinical signs and were sequentially sacrificed at days 1, ...

Detection of tuberculosis in cattle relies on the intradermal tuberculin test (ITT), but a definitive diagnosis requires identification of the pathogen after the animal is slaughtered. DNA in nasal swabs from 50 cows was analyzed by m-PCR, targeting for the RvD1-Rv2031c and IS6110 sequences. M. bovis was identified in two of 34 tuberculous cows (5.9%). The use of mPCR of nasal swabs as an in vi...

Moore swabs (sewer swabs) have been used successfully to culture pathogenic organisms from wastewater. Sensitivity seems to depend on the size of the waterway sampled as well as the number of organisms present. In Santiago, Chile, we placed 24 swabs into the sewers draining the homes of 10 known chronic carriers of typhoid. Swabs were positive for Salmonella typhi in 5 of the 10 households (50%...
