A [Cu(II)16] wheel was isolated serendipitously from the reaction of acetylacetone dioxime with copper(ii) chloride and lanthanide ions in a reaction initially designed to produce heterometallic 3d-4f cages. The ligand has been transformed in situ to three different forms, all found within the [Cu16] wheel, with the original ligand completely absent.

A small coordination constitutional dynamic library (CDL) is self-assembled from Cu(2+) ions and the ortho bis-(3-acetylacetone)benzene ligand. Two coordination polygons, a rhomboid and a triangle, establish a dynamic equilibrium. Quantitative sorting of the rhomboidal polygon is reversibly obtained by crystallization. Thermodynamic and kinetic aspects ruling the CDL system have been elucidated.

We have investigated deuterium-substitution and solvent effects for the keto-enol tautomerization of acetylacetone (Hacac) confined in 10 – 100 nm scale spaces (called extended-nano spaces) based on NMR spectroscopic results, and elucidated the tautomeric reaction mechanisms in the extended-nano spaces.

A stereoselective total synthesis of (-)-kumausallene was completed in 12 steps from acetylacetone. The hidden symmetry of (-)-kumausallene was recognized, and its skeleton was constructed efficiently from a C(2)-symmetric diol by a palladium-catalyzed cascade reaction.
